Cant join my friend on steam

i cant seem to get this to work.
in SETTINGS i have set Multiplayer to ON
then i set Friends to ON so they can join without an invite

but actually i still pressed SHIFT+TAB to bring up STEAM and invite my friend to the game from there. but instead what appeared there was "INVITED TO WATCH STREAM" which is NOT what im trying to do.

so in the game when you press ESCAPE, before going to SETTINGS there is this MULTIPLAYER button that i clicked and to the right came out something about LINK WITH STEAM or GO TO XBOX.COM i chose LINK WITH STEAM and it correctly identified my STEAM name and my XBOX name so i selected YES THIS IS ME.

but then it says "THERE ARE NO FRIENDS TO SUGGEST"
what the hell does that even mean ?

so i researched a bit and came across a page on SOD that says

If you are on Xbox One, ensure that you have a Xbox Live Gold subscription. Multiplayer will not function as the host or guest without one.

what the hell ? i need an XBOX LIVE Gold subscription to play MP ?

From what I know: You need xbox live gold subscription to play any online game (when playing on xbox, ofc). Are you or one of your friends (that you're trying to play this game with~) on Xbox one?

AFAIK you can't invite people via Steam, only in-game or using the Xbox overlay. As such, you need to be friends on XBL. If he has also linked his MS/XB and Steam accounts, he should pop up as a friend.

XBL Gold subs are only for people on console, not PC.

you both need to link your steam account to your microsoft account and be friends with each other on the microsoft account.
after that you can invite your friend ingame over the multiplayer menu (that already works when you friended him, but he not you) , as long he is at least in the games main menu.

or your friend can invite himself to your game about the steam overlay:
*after he started his game, when you already started a session,
*you unlocked the free join for friends.
*and you got him on your microsoft friend list.

I have been having issues as well with this and my son and I are linked as friends - favorites, even - and we still cannot play together. Anyone know what I am missing???

It still says it cannot find my friends in the overlay. Do I need to download the xbox app??

We have done that, and we are still not able to play together. Steam does not detect any friends when I go to multiplayer and link my xbox account. He is also signed in, we are friends and I even favorited him. Nothing has changed. I checked my multiplayer settings and all of that is checked on, so are his multiplayer settings.

check if you both have "host multiplayer" option enabled, sometimes it happens to me and sometimes can pass unnoticed,

hope you fix that problem

if you or your friend can pause when press scape key then host multiplayer is disabled

i think [LoR] Team Triss was right on the money

whenever i do the LINK WITH STEAM and i confirmed that YES THIS IS ME it keeps saying NO FRIENDS something..

this is what i did (and it may be blurry because i cant remember exactly what i did last night)

so, what you have to do is what Team Triss said.. its all in XBOX LIVE.
in windows 10 you already have this app in your computer.
just search XBOX and select the xbox app there. u may need to login.
after logging in search the app for a way to ADD FRIEND or SEARCH FRIEND
search your son's ID there and add. he will have to accept.
so BASICALLY its all about having a FRIEND in XBOX LIVE not in steam.

NEXT of course is the multiplayer setting on your game, the HOST MULTIPLAYER option.
after that, in game when you press ESCAPE you will see 3 blank BOXES to the upper left click one to invite and select your friend and thats it.
