Changing Difficulty's mid way through the game

Can I do this? and If I decide it might be to hard or I changed my mind, can I go back and go back to a easier difficulty?

yes, you can change- it will reload the map, so you begin again at the "starter base" with all your stuff and community members;
i had 4 cars in my base bevor i changed the difficulty, and they were also all at the starter base, after the reset.
although the starter has only two parking slots- the two extra cars also transfered.

everything on the map is reset (plague hearts, quest progress,...), and ressources are refunded.
changing again should also work, up and/or down.
