I played solo with randomized characters on my first nightmare run, it was "scary" for the first hour or so, then it became as easy as other difficulty modes, we do need a new difficulty, perhaps with more changes than just zed/damage numbers.
Well they changed a lot more than just zed/damage numbers. Did you actually finish the nightmare mode or did you stop after the mark where you thought it was too easy? Nightmare scales harder than the other modes.
Honestly I don't think they are going to do any major tweaks to the difficulty anymore. If you really want to make the game harder, then use mods like all feral, all juggernaut. I doubt you will complain with those mod installed.
It is very unlikely that the developer will make the game harder since the game has already been out for 2 years now. If they wanted to balance the game to be harder, they would have done that ages ago.
With that said, your only option to make the game harder is by using mods and hard limiting yourself. Every game will become easy after you played enough of it. With almost 200 hours played, you reached that point.
Currently, Nightmare Zone is easy because you can simply buy the best weapons, and the "sieges" are trivial if your crew have some decent guns. It's especially funny when Juggernauts attack, because when your AI community shoots, every single bullet in full-auto mode hits his head.
dread scales, but not as much as nightmare. I am not sure if you encountered the trio of ferals and duo juggernaut yet, but that is one example. This wont be present in dread. Keep in mind that these pack can be relatively close to each other so if something goes wrong, be prepared to fight an army of freaks and zombies.
Zombies are also more attracted to sound and will chase you further so if you do shoot, then be prepared to deal with the consequences.
I feel like this video will give you a really good indication of how hard the game will be in the later stages when thing goes wrong.

There are some nice mods in the SoD2 modding discord that should scratch that itch for you.
Try:
Dead End Heaven
or
Dead End Heaven: Deicide
I wanted a challange but NM is pretty awful,it just has you constantly trying to stay on top of things.Aslo more zeds hurts the performance quite alot.
dread is better in every way.
Nah, Nightmare Zone is the true SoD2 experience. The only thing that comes close to modded Breakdown (30 levels was the best) in SoD1.
The scarcity isn't a problem if more people would simply move from map to map looting the gun stashes, rare weapon crates and stuff like that, until your crew, gear and base is maxed out. I have no clue why 99% of players insist on staying on one map looting every single useless house and other random containers complaining about not finding anything useful.
There isn't a lack of resources in Nightmare Zone. The same GOOD Materials sites always have plenty of Materials, and the same could be said for most food and medicine sites. The only scarcity is ammo, rare melee weapons and rare guns and the only logical way to overcome that obstacle is to loot as many sites that could have them as possible.
When you already have 25 of each resource and 8+ community members that lets you produce whatever you want to produce and don't have any awful weaknesses, all there's left to do is to find moar guns. Stop with the "finish map" obsession already and start roof-riding...
djeez...
