1. story
2. gameplay/expansions/qol
i will admit though you can store a near infinite amount of cars in the first, can't in the second.
It has a story, overall better gameplay imho
2 doesn't have a story, and instead goes all in on the simulation. If you enjoy the gameplay loop of planning roadtrips, scavenging, and picking and choosing your fights with the zombies, 2 gives you lots of that with some real fun base management and a variety of optional missions to do with your survivors and other human enclaves.
Honestly I prefer 2 a LOT over 1.... but it might be wiser for you to pick up 1 first if you can get it cheap, just so you can give it a shot, see what you think. (Then get 2 anyways)
Be aware that both games have their fair share of jank, from the AI being wonky at times to weird bugs. That said I haven't found anything game-breaking in 2 in 20+ hours of play, so good job devs. (or I'm lucky!)
Overall the game is kind of repetitive, but it is .. good. Even with all the added DLC's it still isn't exactly worth the asking price (probably cause they don't really add anything).
All the problems I see everyone have, I also have had some, but they all have an easy fix and I fixed all my glitches.
It feels like everyone wants this game to be more than it is, but it is my favorite zombie game currently.
That "story" was a prolonged tutorial that showed you everything you need for Breakdown, in a laughably easy environment. Heartland is miles better alone, and you get a 4 map sandbox here(unlike Breakdown's 1) and can even play defense part of Lifeline in Daybreak which actually has difficulty rising waves.
The sequel is miles better, from graphics to overall mechanics having more to them, making the game more complex and not as consolified as the first one was, which ofcourse was due to the consoles being terrible at the time, they improved and the game aim for higher place as well.
also one has alot of mods that work together to change parts or the hole game depending on what parts you find missing or to hard.
number 2s mods arent as easy to figure out how to get working and only seems to be able to change 1-2 aspects of the game at once because each one seems to over write the last, so far have only managed the lighter repare and fuel and twice as much filled repaired.
SoD2 is also much much harder on basic because the devs had to speed up the simulation in the worlds spawns and so on to make coop-MP not seem so slow when playing 2-4 ppl.
that left the poor SP expernce over run and full of nasty side effects like invisable mobs and enviroment ALOT of falling thru the world and clipping in places you cant get to,
Playing SP only myself and I've yet to experience either of these. The "worst" that happened is car flipping out, but the same thing happens in SOD1 so I'm guessing it's the engine's fault physics go bonkers. Overall nothing game breaking that would stop me from having fun and playing as it was intended.
Developer : lol i give 2 different single player story, and none dark ending like SoD1 did
well lucky you im happy for you BUT the issiues are there and sod 2 is much too fast that alot of NPC poitions arnt in the right place every 5 mins you miss the key for stealth kill bnecause the mobs are sped up and by the time you sneak up your actually past the mob and if you doa quick turn you still get the prompt while looking at the enemy face to back attack.
That sounds like MP delay or just some issue regarding your system that makes the game skip frames. I mainly play stealthily(since stealth games are my favorite genre of games) and I never had enemies "teleport" around.
I don't know who is saying this but this is entirely wrong. 2 is better than 1 in every single way. It's basically an exact copy of 1 but with most gameplay mechanics improved and some additional new features. There is nothing in the first game that isn't in the second game. I dare anyone to name 1 single thing that's in the first but not in the second game.
Lack of story? I mean come on, the story in the first game was a bad joke. Almost everyone that played state of decay 1 for more than a few hours played the DLC breakdown which had no story, because people were more interested in the survival and community building and sandbox playstyle, that's why the second game came without story by default. Also the heartland DLC (included in Steam version) for the second game added a story mode if you really need it.
Now if you have a 1 gig video card the choice is easy and stick with the original game. If you have a 2 gig card on up then your fine as far as that goes. The original obviously takes up less hard drive space and as the others said it simply has way more content to offer. SoD 2 is basically SoD Breakdown with the option of multi-player which from the game play videos I watched doesn't seem to be all that to write home to Mom about.
I also do not like the fact that they stopped selling the original SoD when YOSE was released or even how that whole thing went down in the first place. I tend to stop supporting companies who do that type of shady business.
There are way more mods as far as I know for both the original and the YOSE version in comparison to SoD2. For example if your not feeling the 28 Days Later/World War Z style of running zombies then you can mod your game to make them more like The Walking Dead/Romero style of zombies. So that is a big plus in terms of options. There are even ways to make no time pass at all in the save world games out there with modding tools made for that. So that can be bypassed if you don't like it. I didn't mind it myself, but some people do.
The only downside SoD 1 has in comparison to SoD 2 is it has no multi-player mode added to it. For some BS reason they never could add it. So if you don't mind that I'd go with the original or YOSE version they are selling now mate. If your strictly doing it for the MP portion of the game then SoD 2 is your only option if you don't mind paying for a Gold account on XBox Live. I do mind it so I don't even bother with it. So unless someone says and can confirm you can play it in MP on Steam with out that then it wouldn't even interest me in the slightest at all mate.
For online co-op play I would suggest something like 7 Days To Die or even Dead Frontier 2 which is free on Steam. For PvP I tend to gravitate more towards DayZ or even The New Z which is also free on Steam. I reserve SoD 1 for when I don't want to be bothered and just want to get lost out there in my own imagination trying to survive. lol Either way you go with it I am sure you will enjoy yourself and have a good time mate. Regardless of anyone's opinion go with what you think would interest you the most. Hope this helps some. Good luck mate.
I stopped reading right there. This is not correct, you do not need a paid gold membership. It doesn't matter if you buy the game on Steam, Epic or even on the Microsoft store, you don't need a paid membership. The membership is only if you wanted to play WITHOUT buying the game, via the membership. You never needed one, I bought the game on Microsoft store when it became available and never needed a paid membership to play, same now that I bought it on Steam again. For online you only need the membership if you play on XBox One and want to play online, but that's a console thing and every game on XBox One requires the gold membership to play online because online isn't free on console, on PC it is free which is also the case for this game.
If you actually buy the game either on Microsoft store, Steam or Epic all you need is a free xbox live account. It's as easy to register as simply entering your email address and a password, that's it. You only have to do it once and the game will never ask you again for the login details, you won't even see any login screen once you've logged in once.
