Why do aliens make a noise like an elephant?

Has anyone noticed that aliens can make a noise like an elephant 'trumpeting'? They do it in the films - right from the original Alien.

Anyone know why that sound effect was chosen? Is there some kind of back-story to it?

Lol I thnk you mean why do "Aliens" make a sound like an elephant.. Elephants make that sound because.. well, they are elephants..lol.. I'm not sure what you are referring too though.

Its a unique scream that now that you mention it totally sounds like that, I wouldnt be suprised if the sound studio mixed elephant with a monkey or something to make that unique high pitched scream.

I edited the title - looked stupid asking why an elephant sounded like an elephant.

Yeh, I find it odd though - it's a kind of trumpet noise the aliens can make.

Nah, I typed the title wrong intially - Basically, I asked why an elephant sounded like an elephant - then realised my error and quickly edited it

apparently they got the sound by recording Baboons and editing it.

It's an interesting question. Remember the scene in the first film of the space jockey in that huge seat? I thought they created the Xenomorph and these space jockeys certainly have a look of Elephant to them. Maybe they used their own DNA to create these Xenomorph's so share similar characteristics? Sounding like an Elephant which is maybe how these space jockeys sound? I dunno.
