ACM Overhaul (possible crash fix)
I ran ACM on med settings and couldn't get it to stop crashing as well as getting really bad micro stutter. I could just tell you had disabled the 'engine frame buffer' in the ini with this mod (or it has always been disabled). I've played around with this setting in the past and have experienced the same symptoms from after I installed the ACM mod.

You dont want disable that option on for this engine. It will cause performance problems and can cause the game to crash.

It is the "OneFrameThreadLag" option in the Pecan engine ini located in My Documents. You want to set that to true.

So it looks like this, OneFrameThreadLag=True

If you want customize your own frame buffers, do it in the video card options. It is called 'Pre-rendered frames' in the Nvidia control panel.

The "OneFrameThreadLag" option is a engine side buffer, turning it off can screw stuff up. It is not the same as turning your pre-rendered frames to 1-2 on the video card itself.

*Edit*

The 'PecanEngine.ini' is set to 'read-only' after you install this mod. You will need to uncheck that, make the fix to the .ini, save the changes and re-check the read-only option.

Also, I noticed that the "Teather" spelling error is still in the most current version of ACM mod. Change that as well.

This could also be what is causing the crashes too. When the mod is installed, the default engine ini settings have the fixed "Tether" spelling but the My Documents ini is still broken and with the My documents set to "read-only" it might be causing a mismatch error.

Just a shot in the dark tho, but I have caused errors in the past when files are set to 'read-only' and the game can't write files.

I had crashes using the ACM overhaul as well. Maybe this is the fix.

Game still crashes.It has something to do with mods graphics setting because If I set them on max in-game I can keep playing without these crashes.

Make sure when you switch it, the .ini is not set to 'read only'. You have to uncheck that, switch the setting and return it to 'read only'.

(I make a edit in my post)

Yeah, I think it might be caused from the ini being read-only. There might be some kind of mismatch going on.

The best tip I've found to avoiding crashes is to rerun the ACM Overhaul Installer and lower the Master Effects Level. I had constant crashes with default Ultra Quality, but have played crash-free since dropping it to High Quality. As a last resort you can even try No Effects. The game still looks greatly improved even without the use of the Master Effects setting.

I fixed any crashes on my game with one edit.

in PecanEngine.ini

change
[SystemSettings]
bUseMaxQualityMode=True
to
[SystemSettings]
bUseMaxQualityMode=False

This setting was turned on for the ACM overhaul, but a quick google search revealed it can be unstable in certain unreal engine games. It is likely that different hardware reacts differently to it.

Also beyond the "Tether" typo I found another typo that this time was made by the mod's author.

under
[DevOptions.Shaders]

bAllowDistributedShaderCompile=Ture

should be

bAllowDistributedShaderCompile=True

I am not certain what this option exactly does, but now it is turned on.

Remember to turn PecanEngine.ini back to "read only" after making these edits. The game alters the ini file immediately upon loading otherwise.

When I started do ini tweaks waaaay back.... having bUseMaxQualityMode=True always crashed the game. Odd how Templar never caught that 1.

I was also able to play by lowering the quality settings on the ACM v5 overhaul install. This got me past an area of constant crashing. Everything seems normal.

Thanks! Changing those variables in PecanEngine.ini solved my crashing problem.

I did a "find" search for "pecanengine.ini" in my ACM steam folder, found several due to dlc's, but one had more data in it. None of these files had the above lines of code in them... I test the game for a crash by going into the shooting range and firing at the glass which instantly freezes the game and I have to restart my PC.

I lowered from Ultra to High Quality as others have said. What might be going wrong?

I found the file location: H:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Aliens Colonial Marines\TemplarGFX_ACM_Backup.1\My Games\Aliens Colonial Marines\PecanGame\Config

changed as per the instructions, still does not work. game crashes when particle effects from window being shot occur (I think I could have shot the window one because one bullet didn't do anything immediately, but it was my pulse rifle so after a single bullet I pressed the button again instantly and fired a burst which froze the game).

I've got an i7-7700k with Nvidia 1080ti and it plays everything beautifully so that's not the problem.

OKAY... you have to change the above in both the steam/common ACM folder's pecanengine.ini file AS WELL AS in your MY DOCUMENTS/MY GAMES/ ACM folder... done. shooting glass and watching particles fly everywhere, no crash.Thanks for the help, all.

I want to start by saying thanks to everyone helping each other out! Great work.

For Windows 10 (64bit) users...

In addition to what everyone said here I would like to make mention of one thing that was the cherry on top for me that completely stopped the crashes. And believe me I tried everything above and then some after installing ACM Overhaul (Ultra). I found 2 things crashing my game running out of VRAM even though I'm set well above the required amount & huge frame rate drops/spikes. To clear up the 2 issues do the following.

1st. Run your game in Full Window mode. You can set this manually in the PecanEngine.ini file located "C:\Users\Admin\Documents\My Games\Aliens Colonial Marines\PecanGame\Config". While you are in there change "bSmoothFrameRate=" to FALSE and don't forget to set the ini after saving your progress, back to read only to keep it from being over written by the game on start up.

For whatever reason the frame rate stops freaking out and doesn't bottom out causing a crash.

2. And last you may want to "4gb_Patch"your exe. In doing so it will enable it as a 64bit exe file thus able to use more VRAM. You can find the file here ntcore.com. Only down side is you will have to use this every time you go to play the game.

So in conclusion I can run 160-185fps @ 1080p ultra with a few drops to 90fps on heavy load areas on my Nvidia 8gb 1080.

Note: These tweaks may only work for some as everyone's computers are slightly different as well as cared for differently.

Stay Frosty Marines!

Are all these fixes still revelant? It seems like ACM does more harm than good in that case.

This thread is old and redundant. It does not represent the current state of the mod today or have anything to do with the official channel. The advice here is incorrect and will only cause more problems in the latest V6 Overhaul.
