endgame they can be decent as magichange depending on the setup, and with exploits... well, yeah. dont really need to talk about that.
anyway, beastmasters arent good at all if you want to make an "effective" team, by which i think you mean strong? their passive only works together with monsters (gives monsters that are next to him a % stat boost) and their apptitudes+skillgains are pretty bad. they only shine of you whould actually go monsterteam as a buff char.
Might also help if you tell us what stage of the game you are aiming for?
super postgame stuff like baal and pringer x? just finishing the story?
I just like the way beastmasters/nekomatas look so i run 2x kittys and a beastmaster and it works rather well. lots of very buffed counters makes for some nice passive aoe in crowded maps.
However yeah just as a vanilla unit beastmasters are bad if you dont use them with monsters. they just dont have amazing stats or weapon skills.
im not far yet all around lv 20 yet and hihgest is dark eclaire with 50 (shes awesome), i threw monsters together and attacked them with all chars got 10 combo and it gave me 5 full gauges, first 9 weak Beast tamer and then eclair finish, make sure you first give them all orders and then start the fight so that the combo counts.
Sourround gig with them + INSANE stack of groom and domination, you can stack domination extrem high, from 4k atk to 13k atk was it by me so far.
killed lv 533 with 5 times groom and got 9k Mana ( gig lv 102 no reinc.) . one hit stack.
also awesome if you use 9 beast tamers alla round gig who shoot the enemy and the last attack from gig , boost the gauge mostly to 5+ when gig killedit in 10 combo. Even more awesome if you can use alot of +1 attack fields for your bows.
They're probably not really useful for post game. For a story playthrough they're great if you're looking to spice up your playthrough with lots of monster units.
She's best at swords, spears, and axes when her ATK aptitude isn't very good, her SPD isn't very good, and her HIT isn't very good either (in a game where axes have negative HIT).
A 20% stat boost on monsters to pull out whenever you want is fun, but the Beastmaster herself wasn't particularly good until later (she's pretty good in Disgaea D2 in a "can do just about everything decently enough" kind of way and had the stupidly good Dark Blood but that was her last game).
What exactly makes monsters so weak in this game? I thought they had that weapon mastery thing where their stat gains are increased based on levels?
It's the fact that they aren't as versatile and useful in combat as human-type characters. If they had at least access to staves, swords or any type of human-only weapons, they could be somewhat useful.
The lack of capability to use human-only weapons then lead them to being unable to use powerful skills and spells available only to humans, of which we make use of most of the time to get rid of multiple enemies at once, while monsters aren't exactly able to do that.
By end-game, their supposed stat gains increased based on level are basically useless, cause you'll be having perfected items on a Lv.1 Character that could outright beat a basic Lv. 9999 monster.
as magichange without exploiting, they are sub par to weapons. if you have a perfect weapon you will lose stats compared to a perfect monster weapon due to the loss of weapon mastery gain.
monsters themself also dont have weapon mastery which, in lategame, is really important for the 14.xx damage multiplyer.
literally the only reason to ever use monsters to abuse glitches or to gain access to magichange 2 skills (zetta beeeam)
