First off of course is the TDC mod by Ruby, Freek0ly and ZNC which lovingly recreates the TVh-Re/S3 in explicit detail. Fully functional. Some players who are coming over from Silent Hunter get frustrated from trying to keep the TDC on screen and look at their target at the same time, having been spoiled by the UI from SH which squeezes the entire TDC controls inside the eyepiece of the periscope.

Pairs nicely with the Compass Navigation mod which adds the ability to set your course by gyro compass and adds true bearings to all your map tools.

For a more hardcore experience, I would recommend the Real Navigation mod which removes all icons from the map, including your own. The player is forced to activate the "sextant" officer skill in order to get position fix on their u-boat and chart their course manually. Alligator, the mod author, also added an odometer to make navigation by dead reckoning much easier as well as hydrophone and watch crew call-outs in relative bearings.

Sinking Physics Overhaul which adds more thematically pleasing sinking physics to the merchants and warships you attack. Be warned though, you may need to spend more time in the area to make sure the ship you struck does in fact go under.

And finally Uboat Expanded which adds scores of additional convoys and ports to the game based on real data which the author himself spent months going over in meticulous detail. Using actual merchant convoy shipping documents from an open source website to compile into data he could use for the game. Currently he's also working on adding new vessels to the game for the allies and axis.

Here's a podcast I hosted with Link and ii, co-authors of the UBE mod.
