(I would have linked to his reading of Prince Harry's book whilst doing the Matt Berry impression, but that might be inappropriate given the content of that excerpt
Well props to Ben Kearns.
Was Matt Berry asked to voice this character but turned it down? Is it ok for Brightrock Games to use this voice, as many people are already thinking it's Matt Berry who is voicing the character?
Someone doing a really good impression and a company scrapping a famous actresses voice to use indefinitely to market their AI is two completely separate things
No. Impressions are badwrong now, definite thought-crime, double plus ungood. Similarly, all accents, real or faked, are impermissible, and replicating amusing affectations of pronunciation are right out. Also, it will henceforth be illegal to bear a resemblance to any relatively famous person, passing, striking or otherwise.
As for the ethical considerations of emulating an actor’s trademark voice/voices - I don’t think Mr. Berry is struggling to put food on the table. He’ll be okay.
It’s an interesting thought though. Can a voice even be a protected from emulation or copying? What if somebody with incredible good fortune was born with a voice that naturally emulates Matt Berry?
I am curious if Matt has given his blessings or not or if he’s even remotely aware for that matter. Regardless I think it’s a non-issue (unlike the AI matter). Fun to think about though!
There's actually a very funny episode of Toast of London where this happens, Matt Berry's character is replaced by a little person that sounds exactly like him. Season 3, episode 1. Long story short, in the show at least there was nothing he could do about it.
Ultimately, I think that as long as the reproduction is done organically (which is to say, just another human being's unmodified voice) there's nothing that can be done about it.
ITT People find out Matt Berry has a certain accent and others also share that accent.
Why not just get the real Matt Berry to do the voice if they want it to sound like him?
One of the more memorable surprises I've had in video games was when Civ had Leonard narate it. I love iconic or original voices in video games, and sound-a-likes always makes me feel a little sad and cheated. Just a little. Still way better than generic voices though ;)
Because this is a 30 dollar game from an indie dev/publisher and budgetary decisions have to be made. A quick google search suggests that getting Matt Berry to provide VO for a game would run between 15k and 80k depending on content. His recent increase in popularity (due to Fallout and Krapopolis) not withstanding, he's been a headliner on British sitcoms for almost 20 years and commands a higher payrate than would be realistically affordable for anything less than a AA studio.
Fifteen thousand dollars could pay several months of salaries, or for a bunch of art assets or music or whatever. Celebrity voice actors are really the purview of AAA gaming because celebrity names have celebrity pricetags.
The other characters are all great. They could have just made another one of those and it wouldn't have been an issue. It would have made sense if the character was an already established one, played by Matt. Then getting an imitater would make sense. But imitating someone specific for no real reason just seems off to me.
There's a lot of assumptions being made here. Again, Matt Berry is not only an expensive top tier voice-actor these days but suggesting that hiring somebody to do a voice similar to his is somehow not okay strikes as really far-fetched to me. At the end of the day it just sounds like you don't understand how the voice acting industry works.
Secondly, I never said it was wrong to hire an imitator (and looking at Ben's twitter feed, it very much looks like that is what he is) if the intention is indeed to imitate. But I called into question the very need to actually do that since Salazon is a completely new character (as far as I know), and thus have never been associated with Matt to begin with.
Thirdly, I'm pretty sure you are now making assumptions about my Voice Acting-industry knowledge ;) Something I never claimed to have specific insights into either way, and which doesn't really have any bearing on my position.
As I see it my point still stands. Every time I hear Salazon in game it's a trip to uncanny valley for me.
Love the rest of the voices so far though (Medi and HEAL are just the awesome).
