Of course you will see the same cards again and again here and there throughout the games, basic stuff like counterspells, burn spells, kill spells and some entry level creatures, but there's still plenty of variety.
The first Dotp, 2011, suffers from some lack of refined mechanics but has the prettiest game boards you can choose from
Dotp 2012 as archenemy mode where you can play both as and against the archenemy
Dotp 2013 has planechase
Dotp 2014 has sealed mode which tbh is boring as it is very underpowered compared to the rest of the normal decks the game has. It also allows you to choose "random" when playing against any of the pre-con decks
Dotp 2015 is the weakest offering. Has full deckbuilding/customization, but the card pool is quote limited (something like 350 cards in total). But the campaign is pretty interesting and at the same time kinda unfair since you get to play against lots of cards that you arent even allowed to use because only the AI has them
Magic Origins requires Direct X 11 to work so I dont have it and cant tell you much about it
Multiplayer is pretty much DEAD for most of the games though
The latest interation Magic Duels (Magic Origins is a set not the game) is a free to play version intended to keep being updated. So no longer buying yearly releases, or DLC like a few deck packs or an expansion. Per the free to play you earn game coins by winning matches which can be redeemed for booster packs to enlarge your card pool from each of the sets in the game. At your own choice you may buy game coins with real money if you don't want to grind it out. Though it does not have pre built theme decks like prior versions, it has a deck wizard to assist you in building a theme deck of your own.
Earlier versions are ok for solo play, or playing with friends who have them. random multiplayer has dwindled as people move from one year to the next, another reason for an updatable game vs the yearly release. It is largely considered and into to the full Magic the Gathering, whether paper or MTGO.
I own and played much since the 2012 version and have enjoyed each version. 2015 did worry me in the execution, but Magic Duels I feel turned it back around.
Word of advice for the ones before Duels: Deck Packs and Expansion adds more content, but Deck Keys just unlock optional cards earlier than by earning them in the game you allready paid for. Don't want to buy a game and then pay more just to start the game at the final boss right?
It doesn't sound like you people are big fans of any of these games, to be honest. :)
Are the rare and uncommons more difficult to unlock?
all mtg games earlier than 2015 have no deck building; you have pre-con decks, each with a solid theme, and an unlockable "sideboard" of 20 cards per deck that unlock 1 card per won battle you can add to the deck and take away another card from the "base" deck to keep it at 60.
(except for duels)
I am a beginner too interested in single player
