It willl give you some basic beginner tips, but basically the key to winning fights is through targeting weak points.
All opponents, and your own character, have weak points, chin, temple, liver, behind the ear etc where a perfect punch will cause significantly more damage.
You need to throw accurate shots that land on these points. There is a training dummy you can see the targets and practice on.
The computer opponents basically target you with much better accuracy, so although they hit you less often they are hitting you flush on the weak points.
When you start out it seems a little unfair, but as you improve you'll see it needs to be this way or else every fight would be a 1 round KO win for you.
Once you get better you'l probably find yourself using the custom menu to strengthen your opponent's chin and reduce the damage your own punches do, just to make the game more challenging.
It's awesome, and well worth investing time and effort into, especially if you want to use it for fitness. Just take a little whilst to all come together ane make sense.
It also become physically a lot easier once you've done several fights.
The AI doesn't hit any harder than you are able to, but they do consistently hit hard. As you might have noticed, it's fairly easy to land punches on the opponent, but you'll want to work on hitting those weak points Kjaye mentioned. It's possible to take opponents down without doing that, but it's a lot more work. You can see where the weak points are and practice hitting them on the training dummy in the gym.
At the same time, you need to actively try to minimize how much you get hit. Keep your hands up to protect your face, keep your head moving, and don't be afraid to put some space between you and the opponent if you have room for it. You'll basically want to land a grunt-causing hit to the opponent for every hit you take from them.
Check out these videos from another user here on the forum. He's recording his progress with the game and breaking down his behavior and what he should and shouldn't be doing. He plays with his opponents' chin set to 105%, but is still able to reliably take them down.

Nah, I turned Ugly Joe's chin to 105% and can now knock him down with 3-4 punches in the first round. Some days he can go 2 rounds, sometimes 3. Technique matters.
Spider, on the other hand, is pretty difficult for me (we go 4-5 rounds mostly) and he knocks me around in the process. I don't have the technique to fight him properly yet but I'm learning.
Throwing punches with your feet to your hips to your shoulders to the fist makes all the difference in the world. Shadowbox in front of a mirror and be honest about your technique. This game is as close to actual simulation as we're gonna get.

You'll see them grimace and retreat. Sometimes if badlly hurt their eyes will roll and they will temporarily helpless. They also let out a groan if a hard shot lands perfectly.
Your character experiences the same. If you see blurred vision, you've been hurt, if it goes dark and tunnel like you're badly hurt. If you hear your character let out a groan then get out of there, cover up and don't get hit again until the fog clears or your going to hit the canvas!
In the current version, the opponent will grunt if you hit them with an exceptionally damaging punch. This doesn't exclusively mean you hit a weak point, but it's a good indicator. In older versions of the game, they only grunted specifically when a weak point was hit, but it was a little silly when they'd do it for soft hits, too.
If you check out the dummy, the dummy will grunt when you hit one of the marked weak points hard enough and the punch info read-out will show how much bonus damage you received it as "Weak Point Bonus".
Also, it would be nice to have some training mode where you can adjust the speed of the opponent, just to practice dodging and get your reaction times up.

BoxVR is a great supplement cardio routine to this game. It has lots of workouts involving fast combos, hooks, blocks and also lots of lunges and squats. When I started out with this game it was too exhausting to be fun so I spent a couple months on BoxVR, about 5 hours a week and then came back to this and enjoyed it a whole lot more. Now I can 12 rounds no problem, well I'm dead at the end, but I can make it and beat all the opponents at least!

I also recommend boxvr. In one of the videos in the playlist I linked, one guy recommends just standing and practicing your jab and straight about 50 times a day. This can be done in boxvr just playing it. I too, got wrecked trying thrill out of the blue. Tried boxvr for about 2 months or so, decided to try thrill again and enjoyed it much more.
I use custom songs in boxvr, overall the music in that game is too generic for me but to each their own.

-edit 2: by the way, you can customize your opponent to make their punches weaker or stronger, their dodge speed, a lot of stuff. Sometimes I make an opponent super weak and focus just on slips and counters since I know they can never really knock me down.
--Slowing a boxer for training is possible after you beat them once and the "customize" feature becomes available, allowing nerfing or beefing up various attributes, such as punch speed, punch power, dodge, chin, blocking, etc...
--Cardio comes fast, just play it for a few weeks; you will be going 12 rounds in no time.
--Search the internet for how to box videos, there should be plenty.

And of course my oculus either broke again or is on some kind of fritz. Submitted ANOTHER ticket to oculus to solve this mystery problem where it works perfectly for a few months then boom, tracking on the headset is jacked up.
Anyway, 2 nights ago I recorded my fights with mixed reality and everyones settings to 105% across the board (speed, power, dodge etc) and took down spider faster than I ever have before :)
