yes it's the same vibe. sorta. the voice acting and cutscenes are.... well just dont expect anything clever and you'll be fine.

If you're expecting something cool like DK1 you'll be disappointed, but the gameplay is there if you like DK2's gameplay (and play on hellish difficulty). It reminded me of the frantic pace of not having enough creatures to throw at heroes attacking your dungeon heart ;3

bonus question, any of the dlc worth it?
Vecidius Aug 4, 2023 @ 3:26pm
absolutely not. the dlc are extremely short (1-3 missions) mini campaigns. they add nothing to your game experience, just different adventures that dont last long enough to justify their price. if you have cash to set on fire and want to keep playing, go nuts man. If I were a gambling man, I'd say you're going to buy this game and all the dlc anyway tho. I did.

loved that too... imo DK1 is closer to that experience but you may have already played that, hehe.

Clash of gods is very good.

Dungeons 3 is mostly just the part of Dungeon Keeper 2 where you plant the rally banner and watch stuff die. That seems to be the part everyone fixates on these days, including War for the Overworld (though they dialed it back a bit in some of their later updates).

The dungeon building is rushed and doesn't feel fun (I know we can technically take our time, but the narrator will keep mocking us for it). The narrator in Dungeons 3 is alright, but gets old fast, probably due to the massive amount of time we spend listening to him as he pads the game's length. Dungeon Keeper 2's narrator definitely demonstrated that less is more with a few, meaningful lines rather than hours of stale dialogue and meme references.

The game seems fun to me. I like the visual style, the detail in the art, the animations and humor. Doesn't go wrong having the hot elf either. I get the criticism on the dungeon management and sim part being minimized in general. A lot of the pretenders to the DK throne do that but with this one I like that we have the traps and burrowing and room to explore, build to our own design and discover things. It's one of the better examples and at least it feels like there's a reason to build rooms and more tactically, as it was with DK. In War for the Overworld it tended to end up just big open plan areas as they didn't have the wall props. It's very different from how Dungeons 1 felt and that's an improvement.

It's a novel idea to make the hand follow the pointer as a cosmetic thing so you have the precision of the pointer but still get the animations of the hand people tend to expect and enjoy in the niche.

I enjoy the narrator in this one, I guess you either like and get the humor or you don't. Nothing wrong with either but not everyone will enjoy every style.

I think what would make this better is having expanded underground elements and maps so there's more room to play with and that in turn would allow for different level design. Very large underground maps would also allow for some interesting fun and exploration.

I think it's worth a shot for sure if you enjoy DK.

Dwelvers is another one that is lesser known, that complicates things with a third dimension to the building. It's been revived as a project in progress again.

I cant get passed the fact that there is no incentive to build rooms...so you just wind up slapping everything together in one big room. its ugly.

Who cares...its just part of his humor. He can mock all he wants, I don't go for a final confrontation until I have done everything inside my dungeon I want to do.

You might like Dungeons 3 but you need a different head space for it compared to Dungeon Keeper 2. I have only played a bit of DK2 but I think the gameplay involves the player digging out and building rooms, then waiting for your creatures to arrive and interact with them with the player occasionally micromanaging them for fighting or casting spells. In Dungeons 2 the player has to explicitly hire creatures and select what tech you want to research, but you still need to wait a significant amount of time for creatures to do research work. In Dungeons 3 most of the research is instant if you have the resources and won't require creatures, but you need to do more overworld fighting early on to gather evilness.

If you don't mind the faster pace you will probably like Dungeons 3, but if you want a more relaxed experience you might prefer Dungeons 2. As for the DLC If you can get them on discount they are definitely worth it. The main campaign is basically the tutorial for the game and the DLC offer harder missions with new gimmicks. Many DLCs are just 3 missions, but the clash of Gods DLC has quite a few missions and includes some new enemy mechanics, overworld forts and a few new spells and traps.

Same here, that's what I do. The voice over for DK2 could be quite sarcastic and that's just the humor there too. The game doesn't force you to rush, it's a pretty fair learning curve. I found the banter funny as it got impatient and the comments back and forth between it and talya.

Interesting read. It's worth noting too that DK1 and DK2 had quite a difference between them (both really good games in their own right). I've no doubt that if in a parallel universe we got a real DK3 from the team in that time period it too would have had significant changes but hopefully would have kept the spirit.

I hope Dungeons 4 is a good one. Won't be long until we see the reviews from real players on Steam.
