You might be able to use the spiders or dragons to slow down or even kill the incoming enemies, but you may eventually have to go and kill those creatures if they attack your dungeonheart. Another option is to dig out the dungeon and make a very long path for the incoming heroes (you don't need any rooms if you only use Thalya) to give you enough time to return and defeat them. If you create a treasury on every free tile then you can slow them down even more since they will stop to pick up the gold and won't move further away.
In theory getting the first Island of Evil is possible, but it takes a bit of luck and lots of skill to do it.
I am not sure if the types of heroes on each island are the same, but for my test run there were 3 warriors and 2 Novices on the fisrt Island. I aggroed them and kited them away until the Warriors went back. The 2 healers stayed aggroed for a while longer and I killed them... slowly. I immediately went back to the Island of Evil before it resets so that I had to fight the 3 warriors. If you take too long to come back then the healers will return and you will have to start over.
The trick with the warriors is to hit and run. Disable the autocast of your big firebal, because the animation takes too long and you will take lots of dmg while you cast it. You have to stand still for a while until the warriors come near you and start their attack animation. Then you have to move a bit, just to get out of their range. While the enemies are doing their attack animation they stand still and this gives you just enough time to do 1 attack before you have to move again.
Since it is a tight space you have to be careful of your movement and circle around the area. Keep in mind that you have to do small movements, because you want the enemies to stay together and attack at roughly the same time. This is very hard to do with 3 warriors alive, but it is easier with 2 warriors.
I have managed to kill the 2 healers and 1 warrior before I died and then I gave up.
I dont know if the books you find in the dungeon are random or not. I found a wage reduction book, a critical chance book and an armour bonus. Getting a life regeneration book would help a lot. The sustain is only 5-10 health per tick and if you can kite for a long time without taking damage it will allow you to heal back up. This is relatively easy to do vs the 3 warriors, since I found that most of the hits I took were when I wanted to stop moving to attack.
In any case it is painfully difficult and I wouldn't advise it. What I did was get a few orcs to get the first Island of Evil, then left them in the Dungeon to defend from incoming attacks and used my lvl 4 Thalya to conquer the Overworld.
