I am not too far into the game yet, but what I do so far is get Orcs and if possible 1-2 Nagas and go in the overworld as soon as possible to take an Island of Evilness and destroy at least one hero camp.
I focus on gathering gold at first (making a convenient treasury and sometime I even gather it manually) to buy the creatures and don't bother making a hideout for them untill they come back from the overwold... if they come back.
Since attackers in the dungeon come from adjacent hero camps this slows down the initial attacks and gives me more time to manage my dungeon.
And yes, you should definitely grab an IoE as soon as you can. 3 orcs and 2 gobs are usually enough.
4) Quickly research demon tree until you have Demon Portal (and Library). Demon Portal will let you re-enter dungeon immediately to fight off invading heroes. 5) Work on traps tech and build some until you can just defend dungeon with traps. Along those lines, repath the hero entry portals so they have to pass by your traps.
Further refinements-you can research Graveyard pretty early for free undead zombies. A single Banshee (or perhaps two) is very effective, reduces attack rate of melee mobs by 50%.
Personally, I build 2 nagas, then 2 orcs, and then a goblin for my first five mobs. Level Thayla to two early on. Research imps, then build two of those. Don't explore too far in the dungeon! Just mine gold and build farms, horde room, vortex, and maybe a workshop early on. Plus have as many mines as you unearth...just mine visible gold, you will come across mines.
So, within the first 5-10 minutes you should have 2 nagas, two orcs, a goblin, two imps, and a level two Thayla. That will let you fight off pretty much anything early game unless you over-extend yourself by exploring too much at once (and unearthing multiple enemies).
You only need one island of evil REALLY, focus on getting that as soon as you have 7 mobs + Thalya. Then settle in and build up a bit before getting your second isle of Evil.
fighting strategy: you might want using hand to pick your minion if u fight mage or bombardier, if a bombardier appear on enemy army, use zombie to trigger the cannon before fight and make sure they fight far away from cannon, if you fighting mage or wizard try to split your minion to 2 group one front and one back because the area skill of it are quite nasty at start.
as for endgame you just need sacrifice ogre to tample to get book or more snot, zombie/skeleton army or titan unit.

While you are doing that you can use your first mob on over world. Don't use for first undead, they have more like boxes or resing your dudes. demon is ok if you have the mana. Be sure you have one of each you don't take with you. Don't worry about their levels, invasions will get them exp. don't take more than one banshy until later where you replace worker with vampier, get more demons first. try to get snot teleport early, turbos economy.
leveling is a snap later with snow ball as it grabs everyone while killing enemies only. proximity gets them exp, killing blow by that unit not required. Rollin trap is bolder is best next to crushers. always better to concentrate on peeps as traps especially early ones don't do enough damage and doesn't help you in the overworld. You don't need to micro overworld much, just redirect long range/gob to support line, reading enemy strenght is far more important than microing. Don't send if you can't win. Once you have full health auto rez you can be lazy in the overworld and use attrition including tyala as long as you can do significant damage. keep eye on mana as demons can quickly drain reezing.
Don't get guard room just to get gaurd room, it's a bonus organisation tool to park your expendable zombies/skeltons in, don't bother with them in overworld, they are much better used to buy time for you to portal back. unlock for beer, then return to it if later. the next level room is sauna. undead room is too expensive till late game. get fatty in offenise team first if you have free resource, then undead and park it in the gauld room, with hell feind last.
