Almost same as in Dungeons 2. Some units have to be unlocked in tech tree, also hiring is instant, so If You have free unit slots, You can get multiple units at once.

1) Unlock the tech to build a room (a lot of the basic ones are auto available)
2) Build the room; Horde lairs, graveyard, or daemonic portal room.
3) Spend the cash to hire the unlocked creature. It drops into your view, and then heads off to do stuff while you little snots build a "bed".
4) Research another creature for the same room, or boosting your population limit.
5) Repeat steps 3 or 4 as needed.
