But I do read the WFTO boards a lot and I don't agree with the consensus of what the posters there say about this question. They say things like "WFTO is closer to Dungeon Keeper, so therefore it's better."
I don't think being closer to Dungeon Keeper is actually a good thing. Dungeon Keeper has tons of obsolete and flat-out badly-designed mechanics. For example, in Dungeon Keeper (and I believe it's the same in WFTO), you have to "attract" creatures through portals. And if you don't get the creature you want, then you have to throw it away and then wait for time to pass and hope the next time a new creature comes out of the portal, it is the one you want. If it's not, then you throw that one away too and try again, and keep repeating this process ad nauseaum.
That mechanic causes pointless, boring tedium. It doesn't make the game better in any way.
In contrast, with Dungeons 3, you choose exactly what creature you want, and then it appears (as long as you have the resources to pay for it and enough space in your population for it). There is no wasting time by getting random creatures you never asked for & didn't want and having to throw them away until you get the one you do want via random happenstance/RNG.
Likewise, a lot people praise WFTO because it has no Overworld just like Dungeon Keeper games have no Overworld. I don't see the lack of an Overworld as a strong point though. IMO that's a weakness and a huge shortcoming of WFTO.
Dungeons 3 is based upon the interaction & symbiotic relationship between the Underworld (a.k.a. your Dungeon) and the Overworld. This gives the gameplay in Dungeons 3 variety and freshness. When you get bored of your Dungeon, you can venture out into the Overworld. And when you get bored of the Overworld, you can venture back into your Dungeon.
Whereas WFTO has no Overworld at all, so when you get bored of your Dungeon, too bad, there's nothing you can do about that, because the game doesn't offer any other locations in it aside from your Dungeon.
Better try them both and see what you like more. No one can answer this question for you, I think...
the campagin is underground only, everytime Ive played its just been expand your base over your opponents whereas in dungeons 3 its youve got your base, and must seek out other peoples
Just wondering, there's one thing I always totally loved in Dungeon Keeper and is really what makes DK, DK to me.
Does any of these games (Dungeons 1-3 and WotF) have the first person view of the creatures? I thought 2 didn't have it, but I'm hoping at least one of the DLC or anything it is there, or there's at least some DLC incoming.
Dear lord I loved that part.
WftO does have a possession spell, yes.
