Dungeons 2 finally settled on it being a dungeon keeper wannabe, and from what I hear isn't too different from this one. If you care about a story, it's probably best to start with 2. I don't remember anything about 2, as I never finished it, but that wasn't a problem for this game.
Don't bother with D1. After wrapping up D3 and D2, I recommend taking your RTS itch to They Are Billions, and plan for Age of Empires remake later this year.
...maybe something to consider later on for the development team :)
But you have to come from a very special mindset to like that one. One of wich is not to want a total DK clone wich is 2 and 3ish.
That game had the feel of DK and it had some gameplay elements but it was actualy a mix of several different games and only several elemenets from all of them. I would call Dungeons 1 its own completly unique game due to the massive mix that works so good togather and is very veery thematic.
The expansions were quite good too and replay ability is there aswell due to the upgrade system and the many options how to achive youre goal. Multiplayer is really nice aswell and smooth with fun map challanges, altho multiplayer maps are really small, but probably not to hog down players for too long. Altho MP is open, it is completly dead. :P
The very first mission in dungeons 1 is absolutelly NO REPREÍSENTATÍION of the game. It is only a self sustainng map where you can familiarize with the controls, and trough try and error learn the mechanics as you cannot ♥♥♥♥ up that map and it wins itself its just a sandboxy way purelly designed to learn the game.
DO NOT JUDGE DUNGEONS 1 BY THE FIRST MAP IT IS A VERY SPECIFIC LEARNING MAP ONLY!!!!
