I know you can but in terms of what to begin with and focus on until you get around to it. If i'm not making much sense I apoligize, also I'm just curious about other playstyles. for example I start about halfway down the horde tech tree before going to demons then undead. so my army tends to be mostly orcs with a couple goblins and nagas then after a while i start getting imps then so on.
in our release livestream, we played a total of three coop skirmish games, the last one (so you might skip the first ~2 hours) will be a long run, just smooth and chillout game, where we actually researched most, if not almost all things from the tech-tree. You might have a look, to do the same:

If you get invaded a lot, the undead are useful because they turn those heroes into free units/evilness.
Demons are more of a mid-game faction since they require some buildup, but with more powerful units and spellcasting.
Horde are generally better sluggers, but you risk losing them unless you have crypts and stuff. They also give you traps, which let you weaken/kill invaders in the mid to late game.
Personally I use a mixture of all three, always with the basic spells and sometimes traps. Then I just pick whatever I want or happen to have invested in at the time.
On normal difficulty you can start with pretty much whatever. I usually get the two population points that don't require evilness, unblock nagas and have two goblins, three orcs and two nagas.
On hellish it's best to start with demons and undead, since it's much harder to avoid deaths early on. Even if you do get a crypt in the start, reviving horde creatures takes a significant amount of time so you can easily end up in a situation where you haven't recovered from the previous wave of heroes when the next one comes in.
