The issue is that during the release of early access the devs never bothered to implement matchmaking or bots, so your only options were:
1. Invite your friends who own the game
2. Join the GTFO Discord and find a group
3. Play alone
By the time they eventually implemented matchmaking nobody bothered using it because the playerbase were so accustomed to using the Discord, and the fact still stands today. F'd it up big time.
This is one of the games you should play with friends, anyway, not random people.
The fact they even bothered adding matchmaking and bots because so many lonely people want to play a co-op game still baffles me to this day.
That's like me buying a single player game, expecting to play it with my friends; sure there's mods for some but either way, I'm just not meant to.
They still have to release the alt version of RD6, and then rundown 8. What, If anything, comes after that nobody knows.
Im expecting them to just call it a day after that and have no more updates for GTFO. Move on to their new payday rival game they are working on that, If this game was anything to go by, will be a massive letdown. But only time will tell I suppose.
However I hope there will be more to come post rd8. As it stands what we have is a bit of a half baked mess imo.
For the longest time I was one of the people that kept badgering for RD1-5 to be reintroduced as I never got to play them as the game didnt have bots before rd6. However now we have those rundowns back and I have finished them all - I now wish they hadnt gone back to remake them and just kept working on new things for these past two years. Man imagine if we had more enemy types.. more objectives, more puzzles, maybe even a few more bossfight levels like on R6D1.. Although better than just a floating rock in the middle of an arena. But nope instead just a lackluster collection of levels they got to easily remake and kill time with until they cut the support for the game.
While yes, there is a Discord server to join public lobbies, I'm not too keen on communicating with others (as some, unfortunately, tend to ruin the experience (i.e., using the large flashlight to strobe the room for "sh*ts and giggles" which ends with a team wipe)). That said, it would be kinda nice if the game had a ping system similar to that of Apex Legends, where you can pretty much communicate the entirety of the time with just the ping system and avoid / minimize voice chat.
On another note, given how long some of the levels are (literal hours, that some people just don't have the time / energy for), it can be demotivating to play when there is no reward / progression to warrant a loss (that said, even winning, you just pretty much get a random cosmetic and bragging rights (albeit, sometimes the cosmetic is really cool, ngl, it doesn't feel like it'll make the whole thing worth it at times, for me at least, given numerous repeats on later stages)).
I'm still hoping for the "Gear Progression" that's listed in the "GTFO Roadmap" (last update was "June 21, 2022", as of me typing this), that maybe there'd be something to make the trip worthwhile even if the team gets wiped (or at the very least, let me choose the different kinds of scopes / attachments that go on the weapons).

In any case, gonna keep my eyes on the game from time to time and hopefully something new or worthwhile comes up that'll make me want to play the game again.
Sorry, just to add, while yes there is a ping system, it seems very limited (unless I missed an update) to just pinging lockers, terminals, artifacts, etc., but not particularly enemies. What I was thinking of was something like you can hold the "ping" button to bring up a radial menu to give you various options (i.e., "I hear a sleeper here", "Move here to this marker", etc.).
Though I guess in hindsight, I haven't really used the communications menu aside from telling bots to "pickup your deployables".
