It's not. The game averaged 900 players until the work on the new rundown have proven to take longer than expected. And 900 players for a completely niche, very hardcore game with 4 player lobbies a year after release is a pretty good score.

"Dead" or "died" isn't exactly correct. "Dying" is the word. Occasionally game receives defibrillation with significant online increase whenever new Rundown is released. The thing is, game doesn't have many means to make you keep playing once you're done with levels. Also it doesn't help that most people simply give up upon reaching some roadblock (like super difficult level for them to overcome). Each successful try requires you to spend an hour or two, at some point levels becomes quite gruelling to complete. So you can imagine online dropping down to "dying" state again rather soon.

It is dying and soon to be dead.

New rundown is coming out soon. Numbers should go back up.

Whether the game is dying or not it's already a success for the devs. Game sold pretty well, review score is a good indicator, they got themselves bought up by Tencent and are now expanding their studio, to three times the size of when they originally started working on GTFO. The game's future is set either way. Playernumbers aren't the best indicator because simply it's not the type of game you could play over and over, sure you could but content is limited with the Rundown system and that's why upon a new Rundowns release playernumbers spike up because players get to play 7-8 new levels with new weapons and enemies to encounter. The waiting is sure long as frick tho.

What makes you think after the playerbase drops down to like a hundred people and the game isn't getting bought anymore-that the developers will continue working on it? How many games like that can you name that were dead but developers continued supporting them for years to come for free? Probably none cause it doesn't make any sense neither from a financial standpoint nor for the fanbase which will be diminished so much by the end that it would make any logical sense to keep up development for a handful of people.

honestly , i think your forgetting the point that this game is in early access. As more content is released players will flock back. The dev's have also said they plan to keep working on this game much like they did with Payday 2. so maybe do a little research before you assume. Thanks.

Payday 2 has a huge playerbase. The fact that the game is in EA means absolutely nothing.. so are games like Hell Let Loose where you can't find a single empty server. We have seen content release and small player spikes that don't last long.

Game just needs a nice progression system and some way to customize your character.

The game will die eventually there is no question in that. But for the moment, there is an interest for this game, so the developers continue working on it. As mentioned above by someone else, for what kind of game GTFO is, this especially niche hardcore audience, the current numbers aren't even that bad, and considering playernumbers spike after a Rundown releases I don't see anything to be worried about. The one thing I'm personally unhappy about is the gap between 2 Rundowns releasing, we have been stuck with R4 for almost half a year now and that's certainly not promising, but once that Rundown 5 releases we'll see if it was worth the wait or not.
Boompa 6 ABR 2021 a las 6:36 p. m.
I'm assuming once the game is fully released, the rundowns will come out a lot quicker, since the core features themselves take a lot longer than the levels. We'll also see how the game improves as 10 Chambers finishes expanding. Overall I would only worry about the player count if it was low post-release.
