Is there any progression in the game?
From starting a new game/round, anything carry over or unlock?

From what I know,no progression excluding what you start a mission with to what you can end one with (Which are consumables mainly, haven't played new update yet however)

Not yet. No gear or weapon customization, no collectables.

Because it gives the player a reason to play. Unlocking better gear, customizing your character, your weapons, etc etc.
On the Discord one of the developers mentioned that in the future, players will be able to find valuable things they can bring up with themselves after they win a match, for those they get credit from The Warden, which they can use go craft/customize guns and such. So in the future, there is going to be an option for that, but not right now.

When I first read stuff about this game I saw progression and thought this could be a fun game to have skill trees and gear/weapon customization with unlocks, It was only later stated (few months after purchasing) that the progression is account progression not character progression (No idea what this means). So there's nothing to achieve or strive for and nothing to really wanna make you feel like playing other then checking out the new rundown specific guns and maybe the new levels and layouts but after you do that (if you have the group of friends or strangers to do that) there's no real reason to keep playing until the new rundown comes out every fewish months and the old one is removed (to my knowledge permanently). So if you can't/don't have the time you will have to watch youtube videos or stream vods to not miss out on content if you weren't able to make it that far.

Just want to pipe in that games have existed for decades without “progression” systems and the reason to play a game was because you enjoyed playing the game and completing major sections of the game was satisfying.

If you need an extremely arbitrary sense of “progression” in the form of new guns and character skins in order to have a “reason” to play then your enjoyment of video games is unfathomably shallow.

GTFO is getting one but this notion that without a progression system there’s no reason to be playing it is just mind boggling to me.

It´s not mind boggling is just once you know how to easily beat a level, theres not any reason to repeat it more than 2-3 times...maybe 5 if you liked it a lot, but thats all.

Giving people some cosmetics, voicelines, weapon skins, etc.... also give great reason to veterans to keep helping new people in game.

Yeah, to you, because that's your opinion. Unlocking stuff in itself is an aspect of gaming that people enjoy, and some games are literally designed so they are exclusively unlockathons or progressathons. There are multiple gameplay concepts and designs that are built around them, such a part of metroidvania's being that you have a sense of slowly unlocking and building up your character to traverse through areas that were otherwise unsolvable or harder, but are metroidvania's shallow now as a game concept?

Do games need unlocks? No. Does a game including them mean that they're shallow without them? No. I have a job and as much as I loved playing older games that were just round based repetition in my youth, I much prefer the sense of achieving something now outside of personal goals, just how achievements (steam achievements/xbox gamerscore/PSN trophies) are loved by many, and many don't care about them. Especially when a game will have unlocks at some point but doesn't while it's EA, I'd rather wait than burn myself out.

I never said you can’t like it enjoy them, I said that if just playing and enjoying the video game means nothing to you and the only deciding factor for you on a game is if it has some arbitrary reward system that’s unimaginably secondary to the actual core gameplay, then it’s little wonder AAA gaming devolved in to greed and shallow money-making experiences as much as it did.

The notion of “the only reason to keep playing a game is a progression system” makes no sense, regardless of who you are if you think about it for even half a second.

Since enjoyment is arbitrary, who are you to dictate what I enjoy and what it is worth?

I think people replaying the same game over and over doing the same thing to gain nothing is autistic as well, but we're all different aren't we?

This is a pointless discussion, just because you find it "mindboggling" that people enjoy things different to you, doesn't mean it's worth talking about. You're right though, the current state of AAA gaming is a direct reaction to consumer trends and wants, so you've already acknowledged yourself that people clearly enjoy the things you find mindboggling. Is it so hard to believe that I'm on the fence about picking this game up because it's in early access, which I typically avoid like the plague, because it doesn't have a matchmaking system, and I'm trying to dissect what features the game has out of things I like before making a purchase?

Err Isn't getting better at the game a good reason?

I still recall loving L4D2 when I learned how to bash a hunter mid pounce (Towards me)

Reasons are specific to each people, as people are goal orientated. Some people prefer the game to lay out goals for them and for goals to persist past sessions.

I put many hours into L4D as well when I was younger and loved it, but I struggle to play it now and L4D after I've done everything in it and seen everything, it's all very samey. Just like you enjoyed bashing a hunter mid pounce, some people will have enjoyed trying to bash a hunter mid-pounce because there's an achievement tied to it, so a clear written out goal as well.

Left 4 Dead is a game that I still love very much, and it doesn't have any unlockables or inventory, however that game features mods, and I'm not saying Vanilla L4D is bad, but the modding scene is definitely something taht keeps the game relatively alive to this day, considering Valve hasn't delivered on their promise considering the L4D franchise, but that's a different story.
For a co-op game like GTFO, especially when it's designed to be a challenge for the worthy hardcore games, the game will not become less if unlockables/character customization/gear progression are added to it. It just gives it another layer of "huh, this game has content in it!"
You know, playing a map over and over just to see better stats at the end screen, less downs is not very rewarding... Of course, unless we goSUPER MEGA HARDCORE MODE , the majority of the people will want to upgrade their arsenals, their character, stuff like that. In CS:GO, your character doesn't get better, YOU get better by practicing your aim, learning about statistics and so on to get better at the game. But GTFO is a Co-op game, let us have the progression.
