Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
OS: Windows 7 (SP1+)/8.1/10 64bit
Processor: Intel i7-4770/AMD FX-8350
Memory: 12 GB RAM
Graphics: Nvidia GTX 980 (4GB)/AMD R9 380 (4GB)
these are the deck specs
steam os 3.0
CPU: Zen 2 4c/8t, 2.4-3.5GHz (up to 448 GFlops FP32)
GPU: 8 RDNA 2 CUs, 1.0-1.6GHz (up to 1.6 TFlops FP32)
16 GB LPDDR5 on-board RAM (5500 MT/s quad 32-bit channels)
it looks more powerful to me just not sure about GPU power or controller support but the controller support isn't that important due to you being able to use an external keyboard
If I didn't have a PC with adequate specs, I'd buy one with adequate specs before bothering with the Steam Deck. The Steam Deck plays games. The PC will play games and a bunch of other nice stuff.
(try doing your taxes on the Steam Deck)
Do your taxes? On a seven inch screen? You have got to be kidding me!!
I'm sure it's wonderfully portable, and maybe even comes with a magnifying glass so you can read the text.
I think I'll stick with my laptop, thanks just the same.
I thought that was probably true, however, that not only destroys the portability, it also adds to the expense and inconvenience. Whereas I can purchase a small-ish laptop (less than 15 inch screen) and it's already as portable as necessary, and it can already do my taxes without a magnifying glass or any additional purchases.
Which isn't really saying much either, coz I priced the Steam Deck at between 400 and 650 USD, and I paid about 900 USD for my 15 inch laptop (which happens to run PlanCo very nicely). Still, I only have to lug around the laptop by its lonesome, not a separate console, monitor, cables, and probably an external keyboard.
So that's just pretty much the way it goes. You can't please everybody.
You can on a good laptop. Problem is a good laptop in this context will run you a few grand.
Alternatively you can set up some sort of portable "dumb terminal" if you really want to get fancy.
