Basically, once you set it down, in "edit mode" every new piece needs connection to an existing piece. When you have gotten started adding pieces one at a time, I don't think the Z key will do anything anymore.
Now, you can stop editing and go back to "out of edit mode" then you can move the entire coaster around using all the "moving" keys. Then go back to "edit mode" to start adding coaster pieces again.
You can also edit a building for a coaster, and while you're in "edit mode" for the building, then you can place building pieces anywhere you want. Then the Z key should rotate those individual pieces before you place them somewhere. But it can be a little tricky sometimes. If your Z key stops working while editing a building on your coaster, make sure the building is still in edit mode. It doesn't take much of a slip-up for it go back to "out of edit mode".
So don't leave us in the dark. What changed that made it go away then come back?
