they really do a poor job at telling novices like yours truly what airtime is and how to achieve it, had to google around to figure out how to do this mission

Wooden coasters aren't crappy, you just have to know how to build them. Take some inspiration from real wooden coasters if you're having trouble.
Anyway, basically, you're going to want to make use of an element called an "airtime hill". This is exactly what it sounds like it is - it's a hill or bump that the train runs over to induce airtime. Heck, if you have a fast enough pre-drop, your first drop can even give some airtime.
