Report a translation problem
You use the grid selection (bottom right in paths) select a piece of the path and make a 3x3 ( or bigger square) and then you can place the picnic tables.
to pull a grid you need at least on straight, (as in straight with a grid square) path. then just click away.

in the second pic, u can see i cant pull a square path from the 2 curved pieces on the sides, only the middle one. as far as line walking, never seen it yet.maybe u have to much crap cluttering up the plaza?
I've noticed something along those lines as well, but I wasn't sure if it had to do with my custom scenario settings (I set the guest popularity at 250%, so I get BIG crowds). I also use double-wide paths (26').
I've noticed strange things around the new picnic tables though - they seem to act as magnets of a sort, even though people aren't really using them. I know what you mean by "hordes of ants following the same line" - I agree it kind of looks like that.
I figure the new picnic tables need some tweaking.
