Windows 10
We recommend running the game as an admin user.
  • To do so, right-click on the game .exe (by default: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Tropico 6) and/or shortcut and select “run as administrator”.

  • If this is still not working, we recommend to start the game in e.g. Windows 7 compatibility mode.
To set the compatibility mode, do the following:
    • Right-click on “Tropico 6.exe” (by default: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Tropico 6) and select properties
    • Click the Compatibility tab and then tick the box labelled "Run this program in compatibility mode
    • Now you can select a Compatibility Mode and select e.g. “Windows 7”
    • Tick the box below "Run this program as administrator" (to always run the game as administrator, instead of running it manually each time you start the game)
    • Click on "OK" to apply the changes and start the game with double click on the game’s .exe.

Problem saving game properly in singleplayer (any mode)
  • Please check, if Steam and Tropico 6 is not being restricted/blocked by your Anti-Virus program (such as e.g. bitdefender, Windows Defender, Norton, Avast, and any other).
Simply set exceptions for both applications.
    • At own risk: Maybe even disabling them in order to test

Integrated Intel HD Graphics and a dedicated graphic cards
Please be aware:
We always recommend using dedicated graphic cards with enough graphic memory on their own, rather than integrated graphic cards, which need „Shared Memory“, which will impact the overall gaming performance and experience.

When using a CPU (e.g. later i5-processors, as well as many i7-processors) or a laptop with an integrated graphic chip (e.g. Nividia GTX960M), it might be the case that by default this chip will be used, instead of the dedicated graphic cards, which may impact the performance of a game.
You can easily change this by doing the following:
- Update the graphic card driver from the link below.
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Scan.aspx?lang=en-us
- Then change the settings as described below:
1. Open your Nvidia Control Panel (right-click on desktop, select Nvidia Control Panel)
2. Select "Manage 3D settings"
3. Select "Global Settings". You will find the option "Preferred graphics processor". Please select "High-performance NVIDIA processor" and save the settings.
4. You will have to reboot your system for the changes to take effect.

Troubleshooting via Steam
  • Select Tropico 6 from your Steam library
  • Right-click on your game
  • Select 'Properties'
  • Select 'Check Integrity of Game Cache' from the 'Local Files' tab (This might take several minutes)

Problems with Direct X 11
[Windows 7 only] If you getting crashing regarding Direct X 11, it is most likely the case that you have not installed Direct X 11.1, which is required in order to play the game.
As Windows 7 does not receive this version automatically like Windows 8+, please have a look into this official Microsoft-guide, how to properly set up Direct X 11.1 on your machine:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/179113/how-to-install-the-latest-version-of-directx

Possible work arounds for crashes:
Crashes at Startup
  • We have received some reports from players, having difficulties properly starting the game.
Please run this official tool from Microsoft, to see, if the crash might be related to a corrupted/outdated Micorsoft installation.
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=30135
This tool will repair Windows-installations/-drivers/-archives that might be broken and/or corrupted.
  • During the last stage of the Tropico 6 Beta, players provided us some feedback, regarding crashes, possibly connected Asus Aura software. Therefore, please check, if you have
"Asus Aura SDK", or any other Asus Aura drivers/applications (e.g. AURA (Sync)) installed and uninstall those programs. This might help already.
  • [Linux] Crashes at startup:
Simply changing the launch options in steam to "LC_ALL=C %command%" (without ""), should fix this. (Thank you to layer Edwin!)
  • [Linux] No sound and music - Simply changing the launch options in steam to
    "SDL_AUDIODRIVER=pulse %command%" (without ""). [Thanks @DerOli for the found]
  • When experiencing the GPU being loud/getting higher temperatures, please check if v-sync is enabled. If it is not, please set the framerate to 60-90, rather 300. This will also cause a significant boost in performance and calms your graphic card/s in terms of temperature and therefore noise.

Difficulties playing Tropico 6 multiplayer
When playing multiplayer, please make sure you that there is nothing restricting or even fully blocking your connection.
So please have a look and check following:
  • Check, if you have a stable internet connection. If you are using WiFi, use a wired/cable connection, if possible, to prevent any possible interruptions.
  • Make sure you have enough bandwidth available. So disabling all downloads, streams, closing all tabs in your browser is recommended and check if no one else in your household might “steal” bandwidth.
  • Check, if Steam and Tropico 6 is not being restricted/blocked by your Anti-Virus program. Simply set exceptions for both applications.
  • Check your Firewall/s (Router, Windows Firewall, additional Firewall, e.g. Norton) if exception are set for Steam and Tropico 6 in addition.
  • There are no specific ports needed to be enabled manually in your router.
Nevertheless if your Router features the option “UPnP”, we would recommend to enable this option, as it simply enables programs, such as Games in general, which are using multiplayer, to open the ports needed on their own, without opening up huge ranges of ports.

RMG + Steam Workshop
  • When sharing a randomly-generated map you have created, via Steam Workshop, please be aware that the features screenshot on Steam WOrkshop will show the state it is. Meaning, if you have build a city, it will be shown on the featured screenshot, but players subscribing to this map, will start from scratch, as it shares the map, not the save-state of the player who shared the map.
