What about Warehouses?
One thing the Tropico franchise has been missing (and I've played every version of the game since the original release in 2000), is warehouses.

Here's what I'm talking about:

Let's say my island only has one gold mine. I can sell the gold, but eventually I will build a jewelry factory, which converts the gold into a more valuable product that generates more income. The problem is that not all the gold goes to the jewelry factory. Some of the raw material still gets sold at the docks, and eventually I run out of gold to make the more expensive jewelry. In Tropico 5 I can buy gold on the market, but I would much rather warehouse the raw gold and feed it into my factory when there's room, thus increasing my income.

The same is true of other commodities, such as coffee, sugar, coal, oil, and other raw materials that can be used in factories to create more expensive exports.

Please, give us warehouses! Not only can we use them for raw materials, but also at the docks for finished goods that we might want to store until the prices improve. Warehouses are a natural, and this game sorely needs them.

Thank you.

An idea for a sort of warehouse would be to deselect goods for trade as stated above, and then build a few extra docks, but make sure there is no one able to work there. That way when your production buildings and main dock overflow, they should go to the empty dock and start stashing stuff there. I think the capacity limit is 10,000. It is not a perfect solution, but it should be workable for the moment until updates, dlc, mods etc...

That would depend on if they changed how it was working. It was reported in beta that docks still work without workers

Boats will come yes but they wont have anything to pick up since the items would be on the list of "non-sellables" =p

I think basically what you're describing is simply build more docks to alleviate the 10,000 unit limitation of each dock.

Sellable items will still go to the other dock as the teamsters will take all items to different docks, not sure if it's simply rotational or take to closest dock or what, but we do know the goods full at one dock then start going to other dock.

Oh and just tested it out, if you eliminate all dock workers the ships still pick up the goods, I didn't check exactly how long between ships but I believe it was 3 months.

Well in order for it not to be sold you can just toggle that in the trade menu....but I do agree about stockpiling it =)

There's a list of all trade goods in the trade menu. Just deselect your gold.

You can store 10k per dock by turning off the export button as these people pointed out. Why do you need a special buildings to store stuff? So you can create more useless traffic for your transporters so they back up even more or you want to create traffic jams?

I don't remember that earlier versions of Tropico had the checkmarks on the dock for which items get shipped (I may be wrong about that, but I don't remember it). The idea of warehouses in my case stemmed from the frustration of watching raw materials getting shipped when I needed them for my factories. I remember one scenario where I had a single gold mine with a limited resource and I wanted to make jewelry to maximize my profits. Over half the gold got sold while my factory kept running out.

Now that I'm aware of the check boxes, I can make do with that.

If the warehouses wouldn't simply store overflow goods, but be more a central hub for goods (think Settlers 1 and 2), you'd actually decrease traffic.

It would replace longer point-to-point-deliveries with shorter point-to-hub-deliveries.

First of all learn to quote right. I never said any of what you quoted.

Second you are NOT saving any time. Instead of making a single trip to move goods from the resources to the factory you are now making two. Making two trips ties up the transport longer than just one, because you are forgetting that after a trip is when they determine if they need rest, faith, food, or entertainment.

Warehouses was a suggestion made by someone who had barely even played the game long enough to figure out docks already act like a warehouse.

I think there's an option to not exporting specific goods.

There is, which is why the suggestion aint a good one.
