How make drones to work

So I really like the idea of drones, but it's so painful to manage each route. Is there any option for them to do everything autonomously?
Maybe mod or something?

Drones may be fast and unhindered by terrain, but they're also low-capacity and can crash if they spend too long airborne. Longhaul is pretty much exactly the opposite of what I'd use drones for; they're much better suited to shorter routes, especially in high-traffic areas (not counting deliveries to/from docks), or maybe for something like consolidating the output of several nearby factories of the same type at a warehouse to make it less likely that a truck will waste its capacity moving only a couple hundred units of cargo.

If the game handled it better, I'd also say that drones would be good for supplying grocery stores and shopping malls, because you're delivering at most 150 units of cargo (often more like half or two-thirds that) at a time and that's a complete waste of a Modern Era teamster's 1200 base capacity. Sadly, drones can't deliver non-food items to stores, and given how warehouses work it's also not particularly practical to set up routes that can handle multiple products even though the UI indicates that this should be possible.

You've singlehandedly saved that entire DLC. They should literally pay you money.

Yes, I've played for a while with the mod now, and it's so fun to watch all the drones buzz around, without needing any intervention!

Although I've had the DLC for a while I haven't played it until recently, the first 'drone mission'. I loved the implementation of drones, but only having 3 routes each, and having to set up the routes manually took some of the fun out of it, imho.

Your wishes came true! I removed the 'Colonial Drone Delivery Water' building from this mod and moved it to its own standalone mod: Colonial Drone Delivery Water. You just need to update the mod to the newest version.
