Piracy is a tad extreme
I just bought the game as it was on sale and I figured, why not. I've played and enjoyed pretty much every iteration of the franchise (some more than others) so I expected more of the same. Tutorial was standard fare and that was fine. Decided to start the campaign. Then the pirate attacks started. I was like, "Okay, so they're steal some stuff and be done with it." No, not the case, they were like an environmental disaster ripping through the colony destroying everything in their path. I put down guard towers thinking that would end it. Nope, they destroyed those too. Managed to defeat the tank-like pirates and rebuild only to have, not one, but two units of pirates attack. I put down even more guard towers that did little to stop these pirate/commandos that apparently used mortars and siege engines as their armaments. Finally bought the fort blueprint and put that down. That fought them off but the attacks were relentless. They kept destroying my sugar fields so I couldn't complete my crown trade. Ultimately lost the game because no more demands came to extend my mandate. Admittedly, I am tempted to just refund the game (I probably won't, but still, the desire is there). What is with this nonsense?

Have not experienced this myself. I had plenty of time before pirates started attacking and as they were attacking i quick built a fort and set wage to max and that was that. Haven't had issues with pirates, they pop up quite infrequently. Just need a guard tower in places far away from the fort to buy time for the fort squad to arrive.

I wish the attacks on me were infrequent. By the time I got stuff rebuilt from the first attack, I was being attacked again. At one point, there were pirates attacking each of the three islands at the same time. I envy your playthrough that saved you from pirate invasion I dealt with.

It's based on what difficulty you set it on. On sandbox mode, you can turn pirate attacks off. On the campaigns, they'll be more frequent on hard mode. If they're giving you too much trouble, try easy.

Yes. The pirates are stupid mechanic. I play sometimes. Today I thought I'd try a game for the first time in 3-years. Now, I remember why I don't like this Tropico -- pirates are like bulldozers and sweep across the land without opposition despite having towers and military.

I don't think we are playing the same game. I take care of them easily with a fort/towers.
