The biggest difference actually comes at the end of the World Wars and the Cold War Eras. You get different explanations of how the era ended from the Ambassador that you had allied with. (Kind of embarrassing having allied with that era's loser.)
What influences standings among powers is embassy actions like praise, send delegation, ask for foreign aid and trades routes and popup tasks/requests.
Actually I forgot about the Diplomatic Super Party Edict. That one specific edict does influence standing.
Generally speaking there is no difference in terms of aid or what trade routes are available with the different powers. Only in one mission are there mission specific preferences between the powers.
