isnt that only valid for pineapples? all other crops are not affected by this buff
a hydroponic produces around as much as a 100% plantation.
you do loose the sweet 80% bonus multicultur can give you (if you have all 9 plantation types "nearby") and you need electricity for it, also for pineapple, you also loose the 10% boost each pinapple plantation can give you.
on the other side, you can fit 4 hydroponics in the same space a single plantation needs and you can ignore the soil-quality.
so if you have the electricity and money to turn 1 plantation into 4, or if you use less than 6 different crops (excluding pinapple) it is definitly worth the change
Yes there's no point in upgrading a single pineapple plantation, it's not like sugar plantations which gives a boost to all nearby plantations.
