So 1170 vs. 1130 vs. 640 or lower
Which is the best one for modding now? Did they fix the mod problems on 1170 or should I stick with 640

The current supported version - 1.6.1170. Unless a person has a pre-existing build and has not updated, a person should always be on the latest build, as the older ones are not supported, and many mods that have updated may not work on older versions of the game - especially new mods being released. Also, almost all mods that needed to be updated (mostly those that require SKSE64, have already been updated.

For any remaining possible issues due to the latest update, see this:

Good luck!

If you are not starting new game, not interested in creation club and want mod such as QUI to still be working. Then you want to stay at 640.

Plenty of item spawner mod doesn't work well at 1170.

I don't know I'm not off to a good start when something as simple as MCM Helper isn't working and it doesn't have a new version.

I can't even get SKSE 1170 working. Do I have to do a complete clean reinstallation?

SKSE does work, you need the 2.2.6 version.

A full & clean reinstall is usually not needed, just update SKSE.

It completely depends on your intentions. Some mods will not work with the most recent version. Some mods will not work with older versions.

If you have a modlist working well on 1.6.640, there aren't any updates you'd need or any new mods you'd want (which require the latest version), you may as well leave everything as is.

If you personally are a good modder who can sort out compatibility issues without help, run whatever game version you are happy with, especially since I suspect we will be getting at least one more patch at some point.

For any new players or inexperienced modders, I strongly suggest NOT rolling your game back. Anybody having difficulty selecting the right version of skse and skse plugins (which are almost entirely the source of modding problems right now) for their version of Skyrim and installing them correctly are not likely to have a good experience sorting out backwards-compatibility issues. And unfortunately, the forums can do very little to help people running obsolete game versions because that sort of troubleshooting takes an incredible amount of time if it can be done at all (for reasons mentioned elsewhere in this thread).

If you already fail at that then maybe modding is not for you. Not meaning to be rude, just saying. Installing SKSE is among the easy things. You just follow the instructions that come with it.

If this fails then, sure, try a complete fresh installation of the game. However, SKSE simply needs to be copied into the right place and then the game needs to be started not the normal way, but from there on always with the SKSE launcher executable. This can be done in several ways, by creating a link to your desktop and starting the game with a double-click (which then starts the SKSE launcher, which starts the game), or through tools such as Vortex that can work as a game launcher (these then start SKSE for you).

About versions... there is only one way and that is forward. Bethesda has made it painful and annoying for us, but apart from complaining and hoping it gets heard is there not much else to do but to install the latest version ones mods have been updated (assuming one plays with mods).

I got SKSE and Address Library working but I have to really dial back on a lot of mods. I also have mods that are still stuck in 640 or lower. Of course some mods still work in recent versions too regardless of being made for 640. It's just testing all over again. I'm going to wake up tomorrow and 1200 version will be out. It's been just a few months since 1130 was out have mercy.

Then simply lock it at 1.6.640 and keep playing as is.

Keep in mind that you need to install mods for the correct version of SkyrimSE.exe. Some mod authors just mention that their mod is for SE or AE, but that doesn't mean anything. Some posters even claim that SE is version 1.5.x and AE is version 1.6.x. If in doubt ask the mod author, or save you game, install the mod and test it.

For SKSE plugins see this compatibility list: https://modding.wiki/en/skyrim/users/skse-plugins

"BY THE EIGHT!"

1. Make mod list.
2. See what game version supports all your mod choices.
3. Acquire USSEP for said version.
4. Choose a mod manager and install the game via Steam.
5. Take Steam offline and set game to said version.
6. Locate appmanifest_489830.acf and make read only.
7. Install mod manager and build mod list.
8. Play your game on your local machine with admin rights.

I have a separate copy with only 640 on it. I was using the 1130 version to test what mods are compatible but now I have to test 1170 all over again :/

On another note is there any version before 640 that is even better and covers more old mods?

It's a pain in the ***, I know. You can thank Todd for this update spree.

Besides, if you haven't updated already, then I'd advise you to continue with your 1.6.640 setup for the time being, since Bethesda will likely release another update. The current one broke some stuff, like the achievement integration, so they might release something to fix it.

No, the 1.6.640 version should have the best compatibility.
