Snow Troll High Hrothgar - How can I beat him

I am a Newby to Skyrim and I ran into this troll. Nothing I can do seems to have much impact on him. I went through this same part once previously and had some difficulty and made it through, but this time he kills me with one blow . I am at level seven. Any tips would be appreciated.

I climb the rocks on the right side of the path where he can not go and arrow him repeatedly. to go toe to toe usually takes a few more levels.

Lure it up to the Greybeards...I'm sure they'd enjoy the thu'um practice.

There are several things you can do.

As Skumboni said, shoot him from a spot he cannot get to.

Run right past him and keep going. Dont look back, he will give up the chase.

More detailed: I use a bow a couple shots to get him coming after me, then use flames on him while retreating until magika runs out, then a two-hander and use quick swipes while retreating. This will kill him without taking a hit. There are variations you can do with this, such as using a lot of flames if you have access to magika potions, etm.

Finally, just run around and kill more wolves for a while and level up some more. There is no time limit to any quest in this game.

I tried shooting Arrows at him from a cliff but he seemed to recover from the damage as fast as I could cause it. I used flames and they would hold him up but I couldn't cause enough damage to keep him from killing me even after using some magica potions. The last time I went through as a different character I was at a lower level than now it seems the troll is at a higher level. Thanks for all the tips I think the only thing left is to run for my life or level up a few more levels. Thx again everybody

If it is too difficult then you can always reduce the difficulty level briefly.

However, when you are ill-prepared or low-skilled and take on a strong opponent then the game will punish you for it obviously. So you will either have to kite and widdle the target down for a long time, or spend your time somewhere else to become stronger.

You can sprint faster than the troll can chase you, if nothing else.

Though they are somewhat weaker to fire than other elements, and obviously resistant to frost.

Run back > shoot arrow/fire spell > repeat

BRing Lydia with you, as, at least through standard main quest, she should be your housecarl by that point. LEt her tank it while you go ham.

This ... and use a low level conjuration spell (Conjure Familiar) and just run past him. Let them tank him. Lydia can tank him on her own if she is given a decent weapon (two handed) and armor (steel). You can get them both by the time you get called up there. You could assist using a bow or some destruction spell. Be careful not to hit Lydia. She can get in the way.

Enchant a bow with fire damage, get on some rocks and hit him with arrows.

With a handful of specific exceptions, (Normally because you will get a quest telling you to kill the NPC) there are no mandatory fights in this game. Just avoid them entirely if they are too powerful for you. If you're playing a sneaky character; (And even if you aren't) Invisibility + Muffle spells are your friends.

That said, if you cannot defeat the Frost Troll, that is the game's way of telling you that you aren't strong enough for this quest-line yet.

Leave, level up your combat skills, do some smithing + enchanting until you have good gear, then come back as a bad-ass. While enemies scale to your level, you generally get stronger way faster than the enemies do.

You don't need to outrun the troll, only outrun Lydia.
