You need to check ALL your SKSE mods to see if they in fact use AL... if they did a good implementation of it, that's the magic of it, just updating SKSE and AL are all you need to do; however not every SKSE modder takes the time to implement AL, and you'll need a new matching compilation of each of those, as well, or go without them.
Game updates break these kinds of mods, just get used to it. You can scream at the uncaring universe if it makes you feel better... but doing something proactive seems a better use of your time. While you can plan for the future, you can't predict it, so try making backups and not just using Steam itself as your backup. This requires advanced skills anyway to pull older versions off the depots, you need the steam console and various commands. But it's much better to stay current and deal with the issues as they arrive. But upgrading on rollout day, that is forced on you whether or not you have the time today to fix all the crap it breaks, so...
Some mods even with SKSE and AL done right still need help, for example if you have SSE Engine Fixes installed and are not able to run, you need to edit it's config file (enginefixes.toml) manually and set 3 lines to false:
EnableAchievementsWithMods = false
SaveAddedSoundCategories = false
SaveScreenshots = false
You will find out if other mods need such things on their posts section where you downloaded them from. Again this only maters for SKSE plugins; regular ESM/ESP plugins should work just fine.
I would tell you to set your games, all of them, why not? To only ever update when you launch them, never automatically... that way, you at least have a warning, the Play button will say Update...
And if you don't want to right then, set steam to Offline mode and then kick yourself off your wifi for a second, just to be safe, fire up the game and play. (once it's running you can alt-tab and go back online, or just stay online and don't launch through steam but via your mod manager)
I promise you, it's going to happen again. And again, after that. :-) So be ready.
EnableAchievementsWithMods = false
SaveAddedSoundCategories = false
SaveScreenshots = false
and have tried anything else I could think of. This did not fix the problem of mods not loading with the game. SKSE is working, I checked the version at the load screen. The game launches and runs as normal but with no mods.
Anyone have any ideas to help?
Or try searching and reading as this has been addressed.
I must admit i had enought of those pesky useless updates that at best change nothing to vanilla games at worse ruin a modded game so i rolled back to 1.59.
