So... when/why SHOULD you update your game?
I'm currently on 1.6.1130 and I followed Vlad254's guides to make sure it stays that way. I don't have a lot of mods installed and those that I do aren't super "invasive" or expansive (i.e. I have the usual SKSE64 and USSEP, and mostly light technical fix stuff like displaytweaks etc., QoL like SkyUI and being able to hide/decline automatically added quests etc.).

The game works fine and I'm happy with the mods I have right now. I'm just wondering if there is any good reason to upgrade the game version (and reinstall or update mods) at this point or if I can just continue on my merry way in the foreseeable.

If your game works like you want it to, never.

No reason if you're not using or plan on using anything in the CC. I am still on .640 because I am not going to be buying anything in the CC and I am happy with were my mods are at.

:steamthis:This! If you have a perfectly running game, and everything works as it should - and you are satisfied with it, then there is no reason to update. However, if a person is starting a new build, or especially if they have just bought the game, then they should be on the current version - whatever it may be (present current game version is 1.6.1170).

Basically, the only people who should be on older versions of the game are those who have a preexisting build and have not updated - everyone else should be on the current, supported version.

There is ony one issue with not updating, you are locked out of the Creation Club, but this might be a boon as well.

I'm still on 1.6.640 and I'll only update if some new mod which I want will require a newer version.

I installed the game a day before 1.6.1130 came out and I added a few mods and intended to continue the next day, only to have everything ruined by the update. Learned my lesson and just stuck to 1130 from then.

Had a hunch there was no good reason. I don't much care for CC content anyway. Thanks!

The only safe way to play only an older version is if you have backup installation copies of your SKSE dependent mods, and never update them.
I'm a couple of versions behind in my current play through. It's heavily dependent on SKSE based mods as well as enhancements. By the time I finish, all of the updates required for the current executable should be available.

:steamthis:This. Maintaining and adding mods to an obsolete version of SSE requires good organizational and modding skills, and the ability to sort things out by yourself. The actual ability of the community to cope with backwards-compatibility issues is very limited because diagnosing an obsolete build through a forum thread is way too time-consuming and subject to error.

It entirely depends on what you're trying to do and will differ from person to person.

Simply wait until all the mods you want to use are updated to the latest version, before ver 640 thats exactly what I did and ive had no reason to update from there yet.

I've never used the creation club and I never will. People make mods because it's their hobby, and Bethesda is wrong for trying to profit off them in exchange for a few pennies on the dollar. There would be no need for mods if developers where the programmers of yesteryear who cared about their program and wanted it to excel. These days AAA devs are just interested in shovelware and hope for a big hit, or to be political for kickbacks and special recognition. The only reason we've not had a big videogame crash in the last few years is the industry is being propped up by people who want to turn it into propaganda media like they did newspapers, television, movies, schools... basically anything you do is becoming yet another outlet for these greedy rich people who want to dictate how you will live your life based on how they feel that week about whatever issues.

So in summation, never update. They're trying to force your mods to break so you have to use their storefront and pay them for what was given generously before.

When you want to start new game.
When the new update offer something that you want.
When there is a new mod you would like to try but isn't compatible with old version.
When every mod that have dll has been update.
