is the current 1.6 update worth it?
i am still running 1.5.97 but have been considering upgrading for the pluses i have heard about, especially in regards to the console, however, being the Luddite i am i wish to know if the effort i would need to go to will be worth the hassles of finding updates for all the mods that have dll extensions. honest opinions will be appreciated, otherwise feed yours to others.

When AE was released, too many of my mods (or their prerequisites) were not yet updated, so 1.5.97 was my preferred game version and I used https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/57618 to keep it that way.

At time of writing, all but one of those mods is working and so I'm playing on the current version.

Having said all this - I don't know that the downgrade patcher is available for the current steam version.
So I'd probably take the "if it ain't broken, don't fix it" approach here, unless that tool is showing that it works ok the most up-to-date version number(s). You can always update later if you want, but downgrading isn't so straightforward.

ah, any downside beyond just the breaking of mods? or are my luddiet ways just better off being stayed with?

A couple weeks back I updated and purchased the AE package. I been using a guide for building a large LO for it. I just passed 400 plugins and having minimal, very minimal, difficulty finding mods for my build. I have recently strayed away from the guide, to make the game I want, but it gave me a very stable base to build upon. Don't get me wrong, I still used and or will use probably close to 80% of it.

The author has a lot of fix, etc mods for stability and performance. He also notes the AE has fixes not found elsewhere. He has several guides for different game versions and more on his page, click his avatar.

That being said, I am very happy with the AE version. Not sure I have an interest in some of the CC content, but it is easy enough to shut off, as I seen mention of in videos. But, a lot of the mod authors pages I been to already have updates for the CC content relating to their mods.

I actually have not found a direct problem myself. I only said that above because some mod pages posts reported problelm, because they were quite old and not updated mods, so I decided to pass on them rather than invite the problems. A couple I really want I might have to patch, but, thus far, been able to avoid most of those problems with mod authors already updating. Here is the link to the guide. If for nothing else, the fix and tweak mods are worth the review to make sure one has. Hope this helps.

Yeah, that is the most I can tell you. I just started to get into modding and then had a long leave from it for about 4 years, so I am not updated. Also why I decided to use the guide for a stable base. knew from my last go there is a lot of fix mods to find. At least if one wants a large lo.

I can say the author is a vet at modding and I have read of other vets here like Altbert who are in the process of building new LOs for the current versions. Maybe more of the vets/experienced modders will respond for you. Best

if you are not an very very experienced modder than i would recommend you to stay on your version since the new one cost a lot of TRYING OUT since its not compatible with a lot stuff no more. it runs with main mods but if you find something older than always check if its useing dll files. if its using some it probably have not been updated for the newest version and you may crash your game instantly. (you get a warning before you start the game that the dll is not working) so....im playing on the newest version but its a pain in the you know what to mod it. getting SKYSA or MCO to run is also a pain in the... on it since a lot of the mods that are required are just not working at all or only working half. (SKYSA is working but if you want to use own animations again than problems will start and it will be a long journey until everything really work as it should.)

anniversary upgrade itself in my opinion is only worth it for those who played the base game without modding before. for a modder it offer a lot of not needed problems and deliver not really much. lets say all they added would have matched into a single file but they made it a bunch of files in lighpliugin version. not a problem for the most but if you mod with vortex it will be a pain in the... because vortex count different. if you are using SSELODGEN you have to deactivate all of your mods that are using USSEP for example and everything thats over the 'normal' plugin limit. that means NORMAL PLUGIN COUNT + LIGHT PLUGIN COUNT = FULL AMOUNT and you have to deactivate a bunch of plugins by hand before you can run lod generation and after it you have to activate it all by hand again.<3

generally for the modders i would recommend to play on the newest version because MOST STUFF get supported very fast. if you are using stuff like DETECTION METER/QUICK LOOT/QUI or such than its getting complicated to find a supported version but there are alternatives for those that do the same stuff but wear different names. i wrote a lot yata yata now and in the end it will be your choice what you do my friend. i wish you much luck and fun with whatever choice you make!

*sighs* never mind guys, i am not asking about the modding, i very well know how to mod skyrim. i am asking about the update itself and only the update and it worth! but, never mind, i will just stay with 1.5 since i can not get a straight satisfactory answer. sorry to bother.

Lol. Ok then. Stay on "1.5" as you know how to mod. Why even ask a question geared for opinions and then complain when you get opinions? FFS.

i am ask only as to the merits of the update itself, now how easily modded it is which are very well the only replies i am getting. i want to know how many possible additions there are they would make the pain in the ass of updating all the mods worth the effort, or if they are few and not worth my time that if so would just end up reverting anyway! i am looking for objective and summarised reasons as to the yea or neigh. not thoughts as to the availability of mods, i already know that update will need to be waited for!

Look at creation club and see what the creation club has to offer. If you are into CC content, yes it would be worth it.

Since you are asking for version 640, the answer is No.

At the moment..... No!

The recent updates have broken a lot, and the fixes each seem to break more than they fix.... So until the updates dix the vast majority of what they have broken it simply isn't worth the hassle, because you can't simply update and lock it down, you need the next update too..... and the next, and the ones after that.....

hmm, ok then, guess my gut is\was righti will just stick 1.5, as that other guy ststed, if it aint broke do not fix it. thanks for your time
