Yes

It is not necessary to purchase the AE DLC for modding. As long as you are on the current version of SSE - 1.6.640 - then you should be good to go.
Depends on the mods you want. AE kind of made everything a mess because some mods don't support anything newer than 1.5.97 while others don't support the newest updates.

There is no simple answer anymore.

the answer is obviously: Yes. You should.

I wouldn't, but there's a lot of reasons to get it. The DLC itself sucks but a lot of mods rely on it, and some other mods aren't compatible with it. Bethesda just screwed the community all over and I'm not gonna give them one more penny.

If you ain't using mod from loverslab, then it won't be a problem for you. Some LL mod can break from AE.

1.6.640 which is the latest version of Skyrim SE is fine for modding. The vast majority of mods that are still relevant have been updated for it and of course many have never needed updating for any version of SSE so those needless to say work as well..

I mod with 1.6.640 and the Anniversary DLC installed as well. I can build a load order with the same mods I used before 1.6.xxx came out with the exception of Netscript Framework and No Grass in Objects. Load orders of over 1,000 mods on 1.6.xxx seem to be fairly common from what I've seen and I've built them myself..

Thank you for all the answer. I was hoping for a straight yes or no but it is, as I thought more complicated.

That was the case at the beginning of AE, but now most mods support AE. I already have almost 1500 Mods installed with new Animations, Graphics, Followers, new Places and much more and i have absolutely no issues with the AE. The only thing i can't tell are quest mods because at the moment i don't use them. The only thing you should keep an eye on are the versions on the nexus page itself. Some mods use different versions on the same page, some mods are completely reuploaded especially for AE. But it's not that difficult tbh.

Yep, this isn't 2021 anymore. Most mods that were worth updating have been updated, others have been replaced by new and some better.

No, it's still pretty bad. Some mod authors stopped updating because Bethesda kept pushing out updates on AE and several mods still don't have AE versions and likely never will.

It's a mess.

Unless you're using Collections or Wabbajack lists, you need to check every mod you download to make sure it has a version that corresponds to your version. Some will have AE versions but won't be updated for the newest patch. Some won't have AE versions at all.

It is better than when AE was 1st released but it's also more complex since it's no longer AE or pre-AE, it's AE, newest AE patch and pre-AE.

Despite what some may post or claim, the issue is actually not complex at all - some just wish to make it seem so. So, just to reiterate, so as to clear up any confusion: the game is SSE - there is no such thing as an AE version. AE refers only to the optional DLC that can be purchased - nothing more. The current version of SSE is 1.6.640 - any mod that required an update to work with the current version and did not, should not be used.

AE is the community term to describe after 1.5.97 as well as the official term for the AE DLC package. When you split hairs like this, you make it more confusing.

AE is not the community term - and this is exactly why there is this in the PINNED TOPIC Helpful Links and References
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2898569762
So that when there are conflicting statements, a person can see whose post and information should be accepted and whose post and information should be disregarded.

It 100% is, I don't care what the pinned topic says. I care what the community says.

AE and SE are used on Nexus, the primary source for mods to denote 1.5.97 and post 1.5.97.

You are doing nobody any favors by being anal and denying common terminology. Stop it, save that stuff for veteran modders, not a help topic where these things matter.
