Who owns (who can use) the Skyforge?
I say it's up for general use.

What do you think.

Disclaimer: This is one of those discussions where there is no right or wrong answer. It's more to break up the monatany around here and I can't recall it ever being discussed before.

Nobody owns it, and anyone can use it. Eorlund is the current smithy.

It’s mine … but I don’t mind if you use it when I’m not playing my game.

I see you took some bad advise and visited the cloud district too often, now you lost your touch on reality 😉

Anyway, considering it's location my bet would be on the Companions.

I think by right of being first there, the companions own it. They saw it and went "Cool bird, let's build a mead hall here.

The Skyforge belongs to the NORDS!

Well debateable no-one exactly knows it's history. I mean it's older than Jorrvaskr and certainly older than Whiterun as for the current owner I would also bet on the Companions

When you get The Gift of Akatosh, you use it to make Blessed Metal. No where else works for that but the Skyforge, hence the name, but when you have the Blessed metal, You can smith it and enchant elsewhere, nearly the highest in game. I seldom see references to newer mods, like Akatosh, does nobody mod with new stuff? Or just the same old stuff from many years ago?

The Skyforge is older than the companions, they may have built Jorvasker there because of it, but they have no claim on ownership.... Nobody has a claim on owning it....
Eorland uses it because he is the Best smith in Whiterun but it's not his and if someone has enough hubris they could easily use it alongside him.

In the end, its all property of the Empire.

Here we go again. This is why we can't have nice things.

According to TES, both the Skyforge and the bird statue over it were there before the elves showed up. The elven whom Ysgramor and his followers took captive didn't know for sure who built it, but they speculated that the Aedra had a major part of it. However, since Whiterun was founded by the crew of the Jorvasskr, one of the ships used by the Five Hundred Companions, I'd say the Skyforge belongs to the Companions. They're the modern incarnation of the original group.

It is said to be older than the elves, but all sources that claim this are nord legends and propaganda. May or may not be true.
However it doesn't really matter how old it is and who built it. This isn't how ownership works.
It probably belongs to the jarl but the companions are allowed to use it or something like that.
The fact that the player can use it tells nothing because Dragonborn is Special and can use any forge, owned or not, just as well.

This is straight from the wiki:
"Legend tells that the Skyforge has existed since before the area was inhabited. According to the Songs of the Return, the local elves believed it to be a relic of the gods and consequently gave the area a wide berth. Ysgramor and his Companions, however, were quick to claim the Skyforge as their own once they discovered it and they built their headquarters, Jorrvaskr, here. After this, others started settling, eventually forming what is now the city of Whiterun"
So I would put the ownership to the Companions.
