The real question is who actually reads them. I'm not an Elder Scrolls super freak, but I do like the lore so I not only read everything I come across, I actively try to find complete sets for works that have multiple volumes.
I don't need to pick up the 50th copy of "the oblivion crisis" from every bandit occupied imperial fort though... Wasted inventory space, unless you modded in that your dovah requires a toilet once in a while. Probably mods for that somewhere LOL
Long ago, after hearthfire but way before improved graphics, I had every spell book organized by school that I could lay my hands on in a beautiful display but several are unique sadly and I frown upon cheating them in.
Anyway I only pick up books worth 20+ gold pieces even if collecting them, which I am more or less not doing much of these days. Anything under 20 is going to be common.
I figure it makes sense, and I’ll try and collect them all and fill out my bookshelves in my player home(s).
Unread Books Glow is a tremendously helpful mod if you’re wanting to spare yourself the task of getting rid of extra copies or want to avoid picking ones you already have up.
Other book-related mods worth checking out:
- Book Covers of Skyrim + Lost Library
Retextures all vanilla books to give them a higher quality look and unique appearances for each one/set. The Lost Library add-on brings in all the books from previous games like Oblivion and Morrowind and gives them the same treatment (adds an additional 200+)
- BURP & BURP Spell Tomes
Extends the BCS treatment to over 700 additional books added by various mods.
The Spell Tome add-on gives both vanilla and 80+ mod-added spell tomes a similar makeover.
- Books of Skyrim SE
Adds a bookstore to Solitude that sells - you guessed it - various books from vanilla and mods. It’s location is one that doesn’t get touched by many mods so it should be compatible with most Solitude overhauls as long as they don’t dramatically change the layout of the city (it’s compatible with JK’s Solitude and it may or may not actually be integrated into Enhanced Solitude - I forget).
- Unlimited Bookshelves + Patcher
If you like collecting and displaying your books, you probably want/need this.
This mod makes it so that a shelf will hold as many books as it actually can fit. So if you have a home that doesn’t have a ton of shelves, the amount you can display will now double or even triple.
It also lets you put other items on shelves but in my experience it can get kinda finicky.
A separate patcher mod is also available that when installed correctly will ensure that everything vanilla or mod-added will fit nicely on the shelves and either severely reduce or entirely solve any/all clipping issues.
