That seems a bit drastic. You could have loaded an earlier save.
Problem was: After giving Melborn the sword, i spent hours in questing and exploring.
Its an open world game.
Hours later i wanted to go on with the mainquest by joining Delphine at Solitudes stables and
"bämm" punch in my face... :)
Good that You havent played AHO. You have to serve a bot there! SERVE! And this bot is mean to You! MEAN!
You need to go a little slower and all that, but you're more screwed if you're a bow user without a bow.
As others have said, you can do it, it might require you to retreat through doors occassionally, so you can heal up, and to equip what the guards are wearing (might take two or three to get a decent set of armour). But loading a save from before you entered the Inn in Solitude would make more sense.
Still, I do agree with the others about the mission, it really isn't as hard is you make it out to be. Or: doesn't have to.

The last save game before Melborn was hours or days old.
My point is the design of the quest.
Every "oh you lose the equipment" quest i know, gives you the chance to get it back.
But not here.
Yes, thats another problem. ;)
