Black Star Quest - What's Better?

I finished the abysse dungeon of Ilinalta, so I have the star in my possession. So, it's better that I give the star to Nelacar (the mage at Fortdhiver) or the altar of Azura ? Also, will I achieve success regardless of the two cases ?

Black soul gems are more rare, but white souls are more common.

Azura's Star comes with a follower (who FoxFingers selected for an Amorous Adventures quest) while the Black Star is an infinite use Black Soul Gem.
If you don't want to waste the souls of assassination targets or bandits without having to go mining in Blackreach (Black Soul gems are plentiful in ore veins there) then the latter is more worthwhile. If you don't mind farming Mammoths for Grand Souls, then Azura's Star is good enough.

Clearly, the black star is better, I think.
I am level 34 with Daedric armor, equipped with a daedric shield with epic burst. I play pure berserker (no magic, no stealth).
For the quest, do you think I can do it quietly or am I still waiting to level up?
I have not been to Blackreach yet.

Black star is hands down better due to the rarity of black soul gems.

White soul gems of all sizes are all over the place and can be bought in a lot of places too--black soul gems are sold (rarely) by only two mage merchants in Skyrim.

IMO Azura's star is better. If you go exploring dungeons then you'll soon have a full supply of soul gems to use, the problem with the star is that it's a one charge only. Fun if you only need to charge one weapon but in reality you probably need to charge more. And then it becomes way impracticable because you have to recharge it after every use.

I simply went for Azura's star, also because I got a very good follower with it, and simply kept using soul gems.

Im not sure how many suits of enchanted dragon bone armor everyone else needs, but I usually end up with a barrel full of black soul gems. I go with the white star.

I went with Azura's Star simply for roleplay reasons, I don't think the Deadric Prince of FATE would be too happy about messing with her star.

Soul gems with grand souls are not hard to come by either, sitting on like 60 with no real use for them. You get so much money in the game you can just buy filled grand gems if you don't feel like talking a walk.

I do agree Azura's Star is better story, but the Black Star is just a better item. If the story played out the same either way, there would be no reason to pick Azura's Star.

You're right, I must have thought she was related to fate because of Morrowind. She is still and prince that wields tremendous power.

a rechargeable soul gem is automatically a win in my book with this quest.

you just need to decide if you want a rechargeable black soul gem or a rechargeable grand soul gem and a follower.

select the black gem if you run a lot of human-based encounter mods, or find yourself fighting a lot of 'never should have come here' 's
