Lydia disappeared for good.

I think she got left behind by accident in a cave during a battle and she's gone. Doesn't show up in my Breezehome, hasn't returned to Dragonsreach, and hasn't popped up after fast traveling. It's been a good few weeks in game time now. It's been long enough that she should have shown up somewhere. Anyone know how to bring her back? I was counting on having her help me build my Hearthfire homes and marry her for the achievement.

The vanilla game code generally has NPC followers wait 72 in-game hours before you receive a message that says "your follower got tired of waiting..." They will start walking to their home location. In the case of Lydia, this can be Breezehome or Dragonsreach.
If she is not at either location and it has been more than a week in-game, the console can be used (usual console warnings apply). If this doesn't work then Lydia got eaten by bears and is lost. Find another follower.

Ok, here's what you do to bring Lydia back. I know this sounds pretty arcane, even for Skyrim standards, but bear with me.
1) You put on a pair of regular "boots" any pair will do, as there are a number of variations. Then a silver-garnet ring with a waterbreathing enchantment, and an iron helmet. Then put on an amulet of Akatosh. And nothing else, meaning no torso armor.
2) Fast travel to the following locations in this order: Whiterun, Markarth, Ivarstead, Dawnstar, Old hroldon inn, kynsegrove, castle volkahair, and then the throat of the world.
3) Spin around 3 times, use unrelenting force once, whirlwind sprint twice, when paarthurnax tries to talk to you, immediately back out, use "become ethereal" then jump off the side of the mountain.
4) Find nazeem in whiterun, follow him home, then bury him alive under a mountain of various items, preferably cheese wheels.
5) pray at the shrine of talos in whiterun proper

If at any point you get interrupted by a roving dragon attack, you have to shut down your entire PC, do 20 pushups, shout out the nearest window "nicjark fladamont kwado floo!" then turn the PC back on and start from step 1 again.

If you did everything right, Lydia will show up back in dragonsreach. 100% garunteed, probably, maybe, I'm not making any promises, its worth a shot though.

only if you don't know what you are doing, Ive had to use them to fix a few missions such as the gate being locked the first time you enter the vampire castle if you access it too early before rescuing someone

Keep telling yourself that; just keep a hard save before using them so you can roll back when your game needs more things fixed. 🙄

It never ceases to amuse me when I see the whole "if you use console commands even once, you have to excorcise your computer, then pray to jaysust" posts.

We know it can backfire. Modding in any way can backfire, and millions of people do it anyway. Its a risk that people are willing to take. If it messes up, they learn from it. If it doesn't, then I guess mission accomplished.
