Buy Legendary Edition for the mods.
Overall the SE is the better looking version but due to it being more recent there are less mods for it, though most of the better mods have been ported to the SE.
I say go for SSE. Most good mods are already working on SSE anyways.
Survival Mode is also totally worth the few bucks.
I agree with your first statement, but not the next.
Yes, SSE is more stable. And as others have pointed out, the mods for SSE are mostly there. The few big ones that were popular in Oldrim that haven't been ported to SSE are on their way either by the original authors or other mod authors who got permission/used original permissions to port them to SSE.
As far as Survival Mode? Bleh. Get Frostfall + Hunterborn + Campfire and you'll get a much better experience than Bethesda's lame attempt at cold weather survival.
And they're free on Nexus.
64 bit = special edition
You can run SE on mostly high settings, with a few medium ones with a GTX 660, 8gb RAM, and a quad core 3.4ghz cpu...I should know....before I upgraded thats what I ran with....
I legit used a 660 2gb until the 1K series cards came out...tank of a card.
But also a potato.
Anyway, you dont need a SpaceX super computer to run SE. It can infact run fairly well on a potato, minus godrays...shadows...well...minus any of the actual fluffy visual bits they added in for SE lol...
But lets face it, most people got it for free, and most people were more excited for the prospect of a 64bit platform, and not the new gfx bits added...as ENBs did that for Oldrim....even in 2011....
To each their own. I don't mind spending a few bucks for curated mods that work, allow achievements, and don't make the game unstable.
I definitely had a blast using mods in Legendary as it was super easy, literally just click and run.
The rest of the Creation Club is total crap. At least its slightly less terrible than Fallout 4 that is plagued with skins and useless dogs that break script extender every month.
Get the original + DLC for mods. Get SE if you don't care about mods or want the Creation Club content (although I don't know why anyone would.)
You can buy the original here.
