How many mods do you guys have ?
someone once said there was an esp limit 250 .... but there isnt at least mine works fine .

I currently have 502 mods :D someone bet my record !

Currently I'm running 976 mods. The 500+ are plugins, but only the 249 are esp - the rest are esl.
And yes, the limit is 250+5 (the official master files)=255.

250 is a better number to use as skyrim uses slot 0, update.esm and the three dlcs each take up a slot, and I have never been clear if you can also have one at 254 (fe) where the esl files live

not all mods have an esp/esm file and you can have up to 4096 mods with esl files, and mods that replace base game textures and meshes do not count toward either limit

Limit is 256 (251 + the 5 Masters). But since Skyrim.esm is 0 0 in the load order, the number for the last .esp slot will appear as 255, which is what i think Lupus meant.

And yes, i do have a large build, as Lupus said: 1535 total mods, 1103 plugins merged down to 233, No .ESL files, Intrigued ENB.

Completely stable and CTD free, and xEdit is a large part of the reason for that - but just as important is experience, knowledge of mods, and the willingness to dump any mod that may possibly cause problems. Oh, and a lot of patience to do all the reading, research, and editing of records to make it all happen.

Do you know if you can use 255 (FF) which the game uses for runtime generated objects and 254 (fe) which is used for esl files. I was never clear on this

Tulle, i don't know the answer to that one either, mostly because i don't have any .esl mods, nor do I ever let the used slots get that far. But, my thinking is, if they are pointed to using that last slot, then you would probably not be able to. And that is where merging mods enters the picture. I usually try to leave some wiggle room, so I have plugin slots available should I need them - because you never know what you might want or need to add (there are about 75 to 100 more mods I wanted to add in the time since I completed that build).

Not all mods require plugins at all. Most of my minor texture overhauls don't for example (mostly just improving armor and weapon meshes, maybe making them a little more detailed and vivid).

Installed mods 353
- Active plugins 262
- 23 ESLs
- 235 ESPs or ESMs

I think it is important to point out that the number of mods a person has is irrelevant. The only relevant things when it comes to modding the game (or not modding it) is does the person enjoy playing it, and is the game stable and free of CTDs - because it doesn't matter how many mods a person may have, if they can't play the game.

In that regard, a better question would be, not how many mods do you have, but rather, who has a completely stable and CTD free game.

But I would guess that his game is totally stable - LOL! Though everyone should at least have the Unofficial Patch - perhaps that shouldn't even be counted as a mod.

I wonder what the average number of mods used by players for any given playthrough is.

My game is totally stable as well. I rarely get any bugs or CTDs any more. Ever. I'm honestly not sure what happened to all the bugs though...
