yea the steel one always looked like that,..... i think there a iron one too, who less dark ( i can be wrong too, since i use mod)

I think slightly lighter, but I don't remember it ever being nearly as light as the armor you're wearing.

It's just a normal steel plate armor. I think it's not right though as I'm noticing other helmets look darker. I have a mod which changes the ebony armor to a black and gold pattern but the helmet is missing the gold.

Ahh I see, normal steel plate armor, but with a cape or cloak or whatever over the top of it.

That helmet definitely looks dark compared to the chest, is the helmet enchanted?

Yea, something is definitely wrong with the helmets in my game. I just found an elven helmet that's black instead of yellow. Anyone know what's causing this?

First guess would be mods. Assuming this issue started today after the update, maybe that broke one of your mods? It's hard to say with little information, but that is the likely suspect.

I'm gonna save, then disable all my mods and see if that fixes it.

Ok, I disabled all my mods and the problem is solved, but now I got another problem. What mod could be causing this? The only mod I had that changed anything with armor was a ebony black and gold retexture, but I disabled that before and it didn't do anything.

The normal maps and/or enviromental lighting is off for it - most likely from an over written normal map (I would think) from another mod but could also be mesh I suppose. What mods do you have that modify hats/helmets?

The only mod I have that modifys a helmet would be a black and gold ebony armor retexture. I do have the static mesh improvement mod but I don’t think that changes armor does it?

I will probably just go through all the mods I have disable them then enable a few at a time and load my save until the helmet gets dark again.
