does it even matter what kind of melee weapon you use?
As I see it, daggers are the best weapon. From what I can tell the weapons that hit five times as hard as daggers amount to no benefit because though they hit for 1/5 of the damage they use as little stamina and attack five times for every one swing of the great sword. Daggers weigh less, and they can be enchanted and poisoned too so I'd expect them to do a lot more damage eventually.

I dislike the way way skyrim has handled melee weapons. The two handers in games with proper melee are good good for sweeping small room of people because the weapon has something like an arc, or area of effect. I've seen some really good players in games like chivalry and mount and blade and dark souls get surrounded by as many as four enemies only to kill them all with one glorious swing. This is something that daggers can never do. Why doesn't skyrim have that?

Well, daggers are the fastest but deal the least damage, also you should take in consideration the perks for each weapon, maces ignore armor, swords deal more critical damage, axes deal bleed damage and daggers deal more sneak attack damage. There is also a mod that enables all weapons to damage more people depending on their ranke and area of swing.

also various weapons have more of a chance to kill in one hit daggers too but thats more so when they are not aware of your presence....two hadned can two hit kill bosses and so on

Weapons in games are often balanced out in terms of DPS. Slower weapons have higher damage and faster weapons have less damage. Ultimately, the only thing that defines what weapon you use is your preferred play style.

The exception to the rule is bows that deal a lot of DPS normally and can increase to silly amounts of DPS if you include all the perks. This is one of the main reasons a lot of players use them.

By the time you get towards level 70, if you've invested in smithing, alchemy and enchanting, you need nothing more than a dagger.

The way that potions and smithing enchantments increase weapon damage results in a dragonbone dagger doing almost the same damage as a dragonbone great-sword...and you can swing it faster.

The good games are the ones that go above and beyond. The ones I already mentioned and dark souls involve technique and move sets. Not quite as elaborate as street fighter or any other good fighting game, but SF doesn't have potions, perk points or skills either.
Daggers are OP, if you want to exploit everything just to be that "bad ass" character. I prefer challenges for my chararcter, not some ingame stacking exploit. But the same goes for any other weapon as well. Only reason daggers would be the go to, is exploit. Games are now being played to exploit, I hate that.

I tend to use one-handed swords.
I've come across some two-handed swords and axes that were more powerful, but my character is just more comfortable with a one-handed sword.
