Cannot detect video hardware - Set to low quality.
I;m havign a hell of a time trying to figure this out and Im at my wits end. This game works flawlessly on my desktop with a Geforce GTX 750i. My ASUS ROG VG752V laptop has a GTX 965m in it and no matter what I do I cannot force Skyrim to detect my GPU. Ive gone through the NVIDIA CP and set the .exe and launcher to use my GPU, ive disabled the onboard, ive chaged the .ini... WHAT DO I DO??!?!

Well, it doesn't matter if the game detects your GPU or not. The only thing that does is set the initial settings. If the game is set to run with your dedicated GPU in the Nvidia CP, that's what it will use.

If it bothers you that much, at the bottom of the SkyrimPrefs.ini there's a setting that looks like this:

sD3DDevice="NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M"

Except it will say "Intel HD4600 Mobile" or something like that. Change it to:

sD3DDevice="NVIDIA GeForce GTX 965M"

That will probably get rid of the message. Probably. I can't remember if the game even detects my GPU or not, all I care about is if the game actually uses it. I know it does because I use hardware monitoring software that tells me, and the game doesn't look like crap.

might try running the game from geforce experience instead of steam, that sometimes works,

i unfortunetly tried that with no success. the game plays but it terribly. framerate is like 10 fps, textures missing... unplayable. ive got an i7 with gtx 965m. this should look and play wonderfully but the game refuses to see my card.

does your laptop have and intergrated graphics in addition to your 965m, Bethesda games have a bad habit of using the lesser chip

windows 10 I'm guessing, just set your resolution to high or ultra manualy, Bethesda detection software is lacking when it comes to win 10.

Quite the necro. Delete the skyrim inis from your save folder then restart the computer. Run the skyrim launcher afterwards.

I ran into this problem as well, what Sinsling stated is a good start, but this did not get Skyrim SE to detect the card either, so I went into, in my case, the application for the video card NVIDIA GeForce Control Panel, picked the game executable in the 3D drop down menu settings and made sure it was set to use the NVIDIA GPU, not the default "use global settings" blaa,blaa,blaa. This still did not get Skyrim SE to recognize the card, but did allow me to change the settings in Skyrim's options menu to a higher resolution and Ultra High settings. Hopefully you have a similar application where you can do the same, this should allow you to get the higher framerates, resolutions, etc.

Yes I had the same problem with Skyrim and I have spent over 20 hours looking everywhere for a solutions. After contacting Bethesda, apparently if you have onedrive running in your windows game won't work. The Solution is to make another user (starting your pc you choose) to play the game from there happily ever after. Same goes for Fallout 4 :D
