Perhaps I was too wordy in my first post, my question is not build and research order, but at the game set up, do you set research to a slower speed and how many techs per tier do you like to have in the settings?
I tried to do very slow research to avoid having obsolete units too quickly, but it was boring for the first few dozens of turns.
Then i tried the opposite : fastest research. But, with the highest cost. So, i can upgrade fast if i want too and have the resources, but i need to focus on grabbing the resources.
Now, i mostly play only like this, whatever the factions and other settings, and it feels alright for my tastes. So, fastest research, but highest cost.
This does a couple things:
Slows progression to end game units, making middle tier units matter more
Unlike reducing the research RATE, you still get new unlocks at the normal pace - this helps prevent research buildings from losing too much value
Substantially helps some of the less valuable techs that otherwise wouldn't be researched (because a tier has 2 must-haves and then 2-3 alright techs)
I think unlocking 3 techs per tier to unlock next tier is default setting
never seen 3 as a must, it was ever 2
