What are your preferred research settings?
Greetings Space Marines,

I'm on my first game, Space Marines, very easy, focusing on doing story missions, as story missions seem like a good introduction to a faction.

My settings are default, and I'm not particularly focused on research, but it feels like I'm moving too fast through the tech tree. I get a new tier 6 or 7 research every 6 or 7 turns, which is the same time it takes me to produce a unit. I feel like I don't really have time to digest a new tech before another comes along.

Granted, the gameplay for doing story missions is probably different from taking on AI factions, as story missions involve quite a bit of waiting around and going to different locations.

I see that there are some nice customization options in the set up - particularly how many techs needed per tier to move on and research speed.

So do you all find that the research settings are good as they are? Or what settings do you usually find yourself playing with?

Thanks in advance!

A great guide, thank you!

Perhaps I was too wordy in my first post, my question is not build and research order, but at the game set up, do you set research to a slower speed and how many techs per tier do you like to have in the settings?

I leave it as default I'm playing as the Necrons at the moment as I've beaten the game with Astra Militaris and Space Marines

I tried to do very slow research to avoid having obsolete units too quickly, but it was boring for the first few dozens of turns.

Then i tried the opposite : fastest research. But, with the highest cost. So, i can upgrade fast if i want too and have the resources, but i need to focus on grabbing the resources.

Now, i mostly play only like this, whatever the factions and other settings, and it feels alright for my tastes. So, fastest research, but highest cost.

My favorite tech setting is changing from 2 researches per tier, to 3.

This does a couple things:
Slows progression to end game units, making middle tier units matter more
Unlike reducing the research RATE, you still get new unlocks at the normal pace - this helps prevent research buildings from losing too much value
Substantially helps some of the less valuable techs that otherwise wouldn't be researched (because a tier has 2 must-haves and then 2-3 alright techs)

I think unlocking 3 techs per tier to unlock next tier is default setting

The default is 2 techs per tier to advance to the next tier.

oh ok. I said that cause before players were able to change the research settings due to a patch, 3 techs was the hardcoded default setting.

If you make it too slow, any ai factions on setting above "normal" will just push through the tree faster than you and eventually, you're facing boosted, end game units while you're fresh with mid game units.
