Strange. Did you maybe get the complete edition bundle on another website or something?

idk. i bought the game a couple years ago, played for a bit, came back and bought the race packs. i was checking out the unit packs and realized i have seen these units before and loaded up a save and... there they are.

is there a different edition of the game or something that came with DLC? maybe i have that.
Were the DLC units in your old saves already there (recruited, roaming on the map) when you loaded them, or were you able to just start producing them after buying/loading the old saves?

I can't recall if buying a DLC makes new units/techs available in old saves.

On the steam page there's the complete edition which comes with all the DLCs, but I kinda doubt that it would make it so whichever DLCs aren't out at the time when someone buys it would automatically be activated for them.

nope. i just started a game from scratch and was able to get both hiveguard and venomthorpes. i didnt have any old saves from a few years ago. im gonna try out the other factions to see if i have their units but i definitely have the tyranid units for some reason.

EDIT: i just checked the space marines and it appears i dont have any of the dlc units. its only for tyranids for sum reason. space marine units from the venomthorpe pack for instance aren't in my game, but i can get ventomhorpes as tyranids. maybe tyranids dlc units are free now?

That's really weird. Idk, unless maybe there's like a mod or something (some older mods included units that have since been added by DLC), but I doubt you've installed any yet.
There was a bug at one point that would under certain circumstances, make available all the DLC units without owning them. It has since be patched but it's the only thing I can think of. given that it was an old save.

One of those bugs was patched out. I still use the other one.
hive guards are long known for be bugged in that regard. you can find threads for exactly that theme already, and a few more at that. and they are older.

Are you playing multiplayer? I've found that when I play multiplayer all the dlcs are unlocked and I can't disable them unless I own them. Can't select factions I don't own, but once in the game all units are available.
factions: depending on what the player himself own.
units: depending on what the host has, no need for client to own them.

Um. I get that's how it's supposed to work, but I'm hosting games, and consistently getting a bunch of dlc units available that I don't own. And neither do the people I'm playing with.

I figured out at some point what was triggering it, but my memory of that time it is pretty vague so I'm kind of guessing at to what it was. It may have been that disabling any one of the dlc I owned in the setup screen (for multiplayer games only) enables all the ones I don't own. I think I tend to disable the Lord of Skulls dlc, which would explain why it happens to me so consistently.
Sounds like you're encountering the bug that I use.
