For what it's worth:
I barely tend to have any downtime in the game. Sure, building stuff takes a long time at the start of a match, but you can usually speed things up very quickly with research / more production buildings or a second city.
In any case, as long as you keep your starting units alive (or mostly alive) you should nearly always have something to do or fight. Ok .... you might have to let them rest for a few turns in a safe spot with a healing bonus (city, city tiles, outposts ... or all orky stuff in mushroom fields.
Thanks, I appreciate it. I'm thinking of buying the Tyranid, Sisters Sororitas, Aeldari, and Drukhari packs, along with a bunch of the extra units. If I do, but my girlfriend doesn't have them, will she still be able to play with me?
She will be able to, yes, and she will even share your extra units. Not factions, however. Those are to be bought separately for each player.
You can also increase these encampments in the advanced settings.
Shmamlet already explained the basic rules ... although there is potentially a better option ... Steam Families let's you share games. In the case of Gladius, you can play with one copy. Works even in multiplayer - only the host needs to be online ... so you could be offline and join your girlfriend's game through direct connection. That would mean that you need a direct connection as pure online play won't work. In any case, Gladius can be a great coop game to play in this way. :)
Of course you would need to trust each other ... if one of you turns out to be a horrible heretic or causes a deep trauma by ruthlessly burning the other's cities, it might not be ideal to join in a Steam Family. ;)
You might also want to wait for one of the frequent sales before investing in dlcs ... it would mean that you can get way more content for the same price (and the unit packs ... and especially the factions ... are pretty much all good).
Finally: Try the Too Many Voices mod from the workshop for the optimal experience. :)
Thanks a lot. I've been playing a lot lately, campaigns on hard mostly as mostly Astra Militarum, but I've tried a couple with the Space Marines over the past few days.
And of course the valiant guardsmen are superior to the arrogant Space Marines. ;) Although I have to admit that while I like the Astra Militarum (Imperial Guard) campaign it's the one questline I tend to deactivate ... It has virtually no 'pause' button and probably thanks to this feels relatively short - which will lead to shorter games.
Almost everything the quests require you to do you is something you will probably do anyway if you want to play the Guard efficiently. If you don't stop the quests in an early stage (e.g. by never producing sentinels) you'll likely be forced to engage with it. I prefer quests as an optional path.
The way I've been playing, I haven't been recruiting the 3 scattered Astra Militarum troops much since I've been only getting enough to fill a few APCs early game before I start churning out as many tanks as possible.
